xps m170 is upgrading possible?

Shouldn't be too difficult. The tough part is going to be getting your case apart.

You won't be able to upgrade to the Core Duo Processor. The mobo of the M170 is a 478-pin 553 MHz FSB. Pins are also different, even if they are both 478-pin mobile processors. Best you get get is a 2.26 GHz Pentium M "Dothan".

the socket is 479 not sure if a 478 would work, i doubt it though. i am really just looking for a dual core 64-bit cpu. how would i find out what chips would work? will the video card work as well? how could i find a replacement shell? i want this bad boy to be smoken and look near brand new.

Research, research, research. Scow the net and Goolge re you laptop and viable upgrades. Afterall there has to be someone out there who has done an upgrade you are wanting to do and posted their story on the internet. Also be aware that in the end, it might end up costing more money then it's worth.
