XPS M1210 with Integrated Graphics and Widescreen Ext. Monitor

Hey folks,
I've just purchased the new xps m1210 and opted to go for the integrated graphics to save battery life and money and because I don't game on my computer much. It has the intel integrated graphics controller 950.

Prior to purchasing the computer i looked at the intel website and read that the 950 could support fairly high resolutions...and so I thought it would be fine for an external monitor...which I knew that I wanted.

Turns out, the highest resolution option I have is 1200 x 800 (just from looking under display options). How will this look if I buy the 20 inch Dell or Viewsonic??? I know they have higher native resolutions but my understanding of resolutions and monitors is somewhat limited. My reasons for the external monitor: want something for my desk that will be easier on my eyes than the 12 inch screen of my laptop; also was hoping to have a decent monitor to watch DVDs from my bed (grad student with everything crammed in a pretty small room). I don't game on my pc much, but I do want my lcd to be impressive and not fuzzy if I'm looking at pictures or videos or typing a paper.

Are there drivers to increase resolution? I feel like my brand new XPS should be able to support an external monitor...am I missing something obvious?

Any help would be appreciated!

Fair enough, I'll go ahead and buy the viewsonic I reckon. Thanks for your help. Sorry for what I realize now to be sort of an idiotic question. Always have to be sure before I spend money 🙂.
