XPS Hard Drive Issue

My friend came over with his XPS that's about 2 yrs old he said that his hard drive is making a clicking sound and the PC sometimes doesn't start up. When it does boot the HD clicks and takes forever to load. Sometimes a screen comes up saying you need to "reseat" the HD. So I googled it and "reseated" the HD (basically pulling out and back in). But it didn't fix anything. Same clicking noise ect. Should I suggest he get a new laptop or is there another way to fix this? Can one just buy a NEW laptop HD? It's a nice laptop; hate to see him basically throw it away and waste money..

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

a person who does not know you can replace laptop hard drives should not be giving other people advice
