While my good card is away on RMA i bought a cheap 9550, now i wanted a sapphire but they were out of stock, so the guy assured me that xpertvision were an ok brand, and that i'd have no probs with their passively cooled 256mb, 128bit 9550.
I was in a hurry so i grudging bought the thing, big mistake
It kept crashing in (VPU recover) hl2 so i fired up atitools and checked out the artifact thing, get this, at stock speed it was unstable :|
I touched the heatsink (quite hot but not amazingly) and RAM (very cool) but thought maybe a bit of extra cooling would help, so i popped a little heater (fan on only obviously) and hl2 worked perfectly :|
I then fired up farcry, and even with the fan it was crashing after a min or so, so i got a big fan (prob 400m deskfan), and on the fastest setting farcry was stable (well it artifacted sometimes, but not badly, and didn't crash). Just to test we turned the fan off while playing, lasted less than a min b4 in crashed :|
So why on earth do they even sell the card? My case has good airflow (three well positioned case fans), with my 9800 pro all my games run flawlessly with the case closed...
Anyway i'm demanding a refund, and ordered an ABIT 9550, looks sweet, all that vGuru overclocking stuff looks neat, and it has a variable speed fan, monitoring software, dula bios etc, as well as RAMsinks...so i don't think it will have heat problems
