XP90 Fan - Can't decide

Yeah. That one. I almost ordered it last night but I wanted to find it locally. No luck. My usual place www.crazypc.com used to have them but it seems they don't any more. Maybe I'll call them and see if they can add one on my my XP90 order. They are a great seller and my orders placed before 1PM show up next day via UPS ground. 🙂

Why not get a Panaflo 92mm H/O fan and a fanbus?

Does a fan bus take up a lot of room? Links to any quality recommended components (i.e. fanbusses) I can look at ? I'd like a pretty clean, neat & tidy package.

Depends. They make ones that fat into 3.5" bays and ones that fit into 5.25" bays. I personally don't use a floppy drive in my machine so I have a 3.5" fanbus controlling 4 fans.

Well, that is basically the same thing as a fanbus only that one controls only one fan. It's not that convenient to get to since it is in the back of the machine too. A fanbus controls multiple fans and is located in the front of the machine.

Good luck.

The ThermalTake "Starforce" LED fans have the glitz. I have no personal experience with them, but that model was preceded by another "LED" adjustable 92mm fan -- can't remember what it was called -- it had a motor-whine at the top end of about 3,600 rpm.

Similarly adjustable -- also "LED" -- ThermalTake make a 92mm "Blue LED" fan. In a batch of them, some of them only exhibit white-noise from turbulence, others, a slight whine. They spin up to 3,600 rpm top-end.

Personally, I'd choose a Panaflo and control it from the CPU_FAN pinouts on the mobo.

I was NOT impressed with the Enermax line of adjustable fans. I didn't have their 92mm offering, but I bought two 120mm fans of the same sort. It didn't look as though their monitoring circuit was accurate. They were rated "up to 2,800" rpm, but with the rheostat turned on full-bore, I don't think they would spin past 2,200. You may want to run the fan below 2,200, and they ARE reasonably quiet, but frankly -- I think they are a greater instance of "schlock" than some of the ThermalTake offering.

Some have recommended the ThermalTake "Silent-Cat". That's another one to consider.

All modern MBs have the ability to control fan speeds directly from the BIOS or with software such as SpeedFan. Adjustable fans are completely useless.

Is the ablity to control a fan using speed fan dependant on the fan if it is connected with a 3 pin to the mobo? bios settings?

Yes it must be connected to the mobo in order for SF to work. Bios settings make no difference. By now, almost all mobo's I know of can utilize SF's pwm control of fans, however you may be limited by how many fans you connect and by the power they draw. Should be safe unless your using uber high cfm fans. Check your mobo manual for total power draw off the 3 pin'rs. 😉

I can't decide on what fan to buy for my XP90. Whatever happened to the Enermax 92mm fans that had the little dial on them so you could fine tune the air-flow/noise level?

Here are some I'm considereding. Any ideas?

Are you a big oc'r? If so then go pananflo. If mildly oc'ing and looking for "shhhhhhh" get the Nexus 92mm @ Jab.
