I was trying to get into the website of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here is the page:http://www.bls.gov/data/ Scroll down perhaps a fifth of the page and you see the EMPLOYMENT section, then Labor Force Statistics-Current Population Survey. I click the green icon One Screen, and I get a box that asks me if I want to activate Java. I click that, and usually the screen to choose the data comes up. Normally, this has worked well for me for years. However, now I get an box popping up that says,

"Application Blocked by Java Security", and also that
"applications must now meet the requirement for High or Very High security settings, or be part of the Exception Site List, to be allowed to run.

Reason: Your security settings have blocked an application signedwith an expired or not-yet-valid certificate from running."

I went to Java Security Settings, and tried to put the page in the Exception list and also the the www.bls.gov website. They said both pages are security risks because they were http and not https. I'm stumped.

I have an old computer with XP3, but never had this issue before. Any way to get help possible, (besides being asked what the heck am I doing running an ancient computer)?

It should still add them to the exception list with http and you may have to add more addresses because a lot of times dynamic pages will pull elements (ex. Java) from external addresses. You might also try a different browser.

It added both the bls website and the specific bls page I was quoting in the exceptions box, but when I tried to get Java to come up, it did not work. All this was in Firefox.

I went to Opera, which I haven't used in awhile and noticed a lot of ads for Firefox. Didn't work in Opera either.

I went to Internet Explorer, and a box came up saying it was not a good idea to open up Java, but if I did want to open it just check a box. It opened. So your suggestion worked, thank you very much. I would like to figure out how to open Java in Firefox, but it's not that big a deal now that I know it opens in IE.

I'm puzzled. Why would there be a problem with the security certificate in a Federal government website?

From the look of it it seems the security certificate expired about a week ago.
Maybe they just don't know.

It should come as not surprise but Java was one of those things where most sites dont secure the java applet, but oracle is getting a bit better requiring signed applets and in the Java 8 runtime, it even removed the Medium security option, so you have to manually make the exception or work around it.

I've seen this from government websites to banks as well

The one time where I'm thankful my company is running an old Java version. Supporting a couple dozen old printers (circa 1999) would be a royal pain.

Yes I clicked that GREEN button and got this page

http://data.bls.gov/pdq/querytool.jsp?survey=ln

Which I got a Java box asking if I wanted to run the applet.. (Im on Java 1.5.0_04) I know they made hell out of Java with these newer versions......

WHAT IF YOU SET THE JAVA SECURITY SETTINGS TO LOW,DOES IT STILL BOTHER YOU??

Geez, I didn't know more people had replied after I found I can access the website in IE, (I usually use Firefox). Maybe it was the security certificate had expired because I found out a few days later, I did not have to switch over to IE to access the Bureau of Labor Statistics website, Firefox did finally work.

I want to thank Dahak, Zodiar, and Dude 111 for their contributions. I would have replied earlier but I thought the problem was solved by switching to IE, I didn't realize you folks had replied after that post. Much thanks.
