Putting together a system for a friend the basic specs are:

NF7-S rev 2
XFX FX5900XT
2x256 Corsair TwinX 1024C2PT

With a 2800+(unlocked supposedly)
Or a 2500+ mobile (IQXEA0330VPMW)

What would give him the most mileage? Oc'ing is not his primary goal, but would like the headroom.

Mobile hands down. I'd suggest the 35w 2200 or 2400 though.

Could you elaborate? I was literally just about to grab a 2500+ from NewEgg when I saw your post. I've got an SI-97 and Panaflo M1 on stand-by.

Thanks!

I had a standard Barton mobile 2400+ that topped out@2.2ghz stable on any voltage 1.85v and below. I have a 2200+ 35w now that does 2.5ghz on the same voltage, so my experience with the mobiles is that the chances of a good overclock are better with the 35watters. Others who get the 35watters seem to feel the same way about the odds it seems.

Sounds good. Feels kind of funny upgrading from a 2100+ to a 2200+ but I'm sure it'll be worth it.

I haven't seen anyone who knows their stuff not break 2.4ghz with a 35watter yet. Remember, these ar desinged to run the rated speed on low power for better battery life and less heat, which means they ramp like a mofo when juiced. Good luck and post up how it does :)

Will do! I won't be trying to break any speed records, especially since it'll be my first time overclocking. I'm mainly looking for a way to use my memory to its full potential ... Corsair DDR400 that's been running at 133mhz its whole life. :) I'll be happy if I can break 2ghz.

Thanks for the advice!

No problem :) What board do you have? If it is a good overclocking nForce2 you shouldn't have any problems doing 2ghz with that 35W even without bumping voltage above what the board defaults the mobile to in most cases, just up the multiplier to 10 with the fsb and ram@200mhz and bam! DDR400 synch mode.
