XP2400+NF2 vs P4/2.4b+GraniteBay Opinions

I am in the process of replacing my aging system and would like opinions on the two alternatives I'm considering:
1) XP2400+ with an NForce2 MB
2) P4 2.4b with GraniteBay MB

Dual Channel DDR seems to be the way to go and I've already decided on an ATI 9500Pro Video card.

Any opinions on these options would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The AMD option right now is a bit cheaper weighing in at $184 for the OEM CPU w/ 1 year warranty, Epox 8RDA+ at 108$, and a nice HSF unit running for about $30 (assuming your going to do overclocking). Comes to 322$

The P4 combo will run you about $190 for the Retail 2.4B and around $215 for a lower-end GB motherboard. A Higher-end mobo will run you about $230. Comes out to about $415.

Performance wise, you cannot go wrong with either combo. They both perform extremely similar and even overclocked are coming out to about the same levels of performance.

Make your decision based on personal preference or how much money your willing to spend.

Also, a viable option would be spending $105 on the XP 2100+ Tbred B w/ 1 year warranty which is a 99% guaranteed 2.158ghz at 166x13 (XP 2700+ speed) with a decent heatsink. This will let you put some extra $ towards anything else you would like.

Some ppl may not wish to take the risk of overclocking, and therefor a 2400+ is not a bad option at all. Yes, a 2100+ is probably the "sure thing" overclocker CPU. Weighing in at $100 and aproximately 2.4GHz of performance, it sure is a deal if you are a tweeker.

Thanks for the Opinions.
It sounds like this Thoroughbred "B" core is definetly the processor version to get.
Unfortunalty for me, NewEgg won't ship outside the US and I can't seem to find any TB"B" CPUs at any of my local retailers (2100 or anything else).

One retailer said all the XP2400+ CPUs are TB"B"s, but since it was boxed, I could not check it.
Is that true or is this yet another uninformed retailer?
Thanks,
G

I would go with the AMD system because the onboard audio of the nforce2 boards with nvidia audio is top notch, better than a Creative audigy. With a granite bay board you'll probably have to add a sound card so that adds more to the purchase. I would get this combo:

Abit NF7-S motherboard
AMD XP 2400+ OEM processor
Thermalright heatsink
YS-Tech or Panasonic Panaflo Fan

AMD, just got my 2100+ Tbred B from fry's today running it at 2.3ghz as i'm typing. will need to bump up more volts and see what more i can get 😛

don't forget that p4's generally run a bit cooler than amd cpu's, too. So, if noise is a big issue for you, I would think that amd's tend to be a bit noisier just because they generally need more airflow.

On the other hand... for that price - dang.

Why do you say the onboard nf2 audio is better than the Creative Audigy? How is it better? 😕

From all the reviews, etc, and also my personal listening, I can say that the NForce2 Audio from my Asus A7N8X Deluxe is better then my Audigy card. Sounds a bit clearer with no more pops (especially since I had been using the dreaded Via/SB combo). Also, many reviews say that the audio is better then the audigy, but below the Audigy 2.

From a purely sound perspective alone, the nForce2 is up there with the best stand alone sound cards, better than the Audigy and not too far from the Audigy 2.

Get the Athlon XP 2500+ (512K cache Barton core) and a nForce2 board.
Though around April, Intel may be coming out with a HyperThreading 2.4B GHz CPU, possibly around April, along with 800MHz FSB CPU's and the Canterwood chipset. If you can't wait, and want to go with Intel, check out the Gigabyte SINXP1394 motherboard and a P4 2.4B GHz.
