XP2100+ (T-bred b) running at 55-65 degrees C at full load?

hello all,
right, i put my box together ok, but as you can see from the title i'm having a few problems!

i'd be very grateful if you would spare any advice. :)

here we go, up until last night i was running a:
1200/266 T-bird
256MB DDR2100
Abit KG7 Lite
GF3 clocked at 220/510
Aopen Midi ATX case (1 front fan) with a 300W PSU
Thermoengine hs/f rated to 1.73GHz (used heat pad on hs/f)

sytsem temp: 30 degrees C
idle CPU temp: 42 degrees C
load CPU temp: 50 degrees C

now i am running:
XP2100+ (T-bred b)
512MB DDR2700 (major brand?)
Abit NF7-s (1.1 rev)
GF3 clocked at 220/510
Aopen Midi ATX case (1 front fan) with a 300W PSU
Thermoengine hs/f rated to 1.73GHz (used coolermater paste)

sytsem temp: 34 degrees C
idle CPU temp: 52 degrees C
load CPU temp: 61 degrees C

this seems a hell of a jump considering that my new CPU is a supposedly cool running T-bred b AHIUB 0203!
we used a coolermaster brand heat paste between the CPU and hs/f, although we used a cotton bud to get an even spread! could cotton fibres reduce the efficiency of the heat transfer? if this is a no no, how do you get an even spread of heat paste without shorting the bridges on the CPU plate?

or am i making a big fuss, and its perfectly OK given the above conditions for a 2100+ T-bred to run at 61 degrees C at full load?

cheers for any help

REMF

p.s. runs fine at a multiplier of 11 and a FSB of 166! :D although not leaving it that way until CPU temp is sorted. :(

i'm running the v1.2 BIOS, and people are saying the v1.3 reduces their reported CPU temp by 15 degrres C!
anyone else have a similar experience?

thanks

abit usually reads the temps unusually high
try touching the heatsink to see whether it's extremely hot(60c and above)

and did you clean off the pad properly?

yeah the pad was properly removed before putting the paste on.

the heatsink feels warm, but not hot to the touch.

cheers

I certainly wouldn't recommend using a cotton swab to apply the grease. Too easy for fibres to get between the cpu and heatsink. The easiest way I've found to do it is to use a credit card and slowly smooth it and remove the excess. It applies even pressure and allows you to apply a much thinner coat.

I agree with Zodder on not using a fiberous material. If you don't want to use a credit card, I've found a razor blade to work very well for this job. Believe it or not, you can use coffee filter material for cleaning purposes on HS....they work great, and not fiber residue!

cheers all,

installed the 1.3 rev BIOS and saw temps drop to:

system temp of 32 degrees C
idle temp 42 degrees C
load temp 52 degrees C

also found that winbond kept on switching the CPU fan off! is there any fix for this?

and winbond also kept on popping up a CPU fan warning, probably due to a sticking fan which has since been replaced.

currently running fine at 1830MHz, 11 x 166. :)

I've got the same motherboard and CPU. My temps under full load (prime95 hours on end): 27(case)/41(CPU). This is after the 1.3 BIOS flash. My CPU idle temp is 36. I also have a similar HSF (a Thermoengine I bought 15 months ago from 3dcool.com, which I think comes with a higher capacity fan than the original Thermoengine). I think your temps are still a bit high, partly from the case, and partly from the HSF.

As for the winbond warnings, I disabled the fan warning. Winbond just isn't reading the fan correctly for some reason. I've also installed MBM, and it reads the fam correctly (~7200 RPM). I was also getting a Vbat warning which I disabled.
