XP2100+ overheating?

i have an athlon xp2100+, with a nexus SP702512M cooler.

before i used this cooler i (think) i was overheating and locking quite a lot.

SIV tells me I'm running at about 55 degrees (got the case off) i still occasionally lock (on hot days?!?)

i've just checked the contact between the cpu and the cooler - polished it up and put more gunk on it - seems ok.

if this cpu has overheated (i believe) and locked quite a few times in the past (maybe 50 times?) is it likely to damage it and make it more prone to failing?

am considering buying a new xp2200+ cpu or something.

thanks

Is 55C under full load or idle? That's a little high, considering the case is off, but still within AMD's operating temps. The XP chips are good up to 70-80C.

55C is when it's doing stuff - i usually have MP3's playing.

it's frozen during DivX movies before etc, after 30 mins or so.

i was getting 63C constantly with my rpev heatsink before it froze, with this nexus one I'm getting about 58 before it freezes...still locks but it locks at an apparently lower temperature...very strange.

just wonderinf if prevoius overheating of the chip was likely to lower it's "stamina", and make it more liable to fail now. and if so, I'll fork out for a new 2600+ or something that hasn't been hurt before :)

well i seem to be locking all the time now. played unreal tournament and pod racing for 20 mins and froze.

my games are on my c drive, and i had "ntldr not found" after one crash. managed to get it off the windows cd using command prompt recovery.

i've just ordered a new 2400+ cpu...hopefully that will fix it. !....

The 2400+ will run hotter. It will not fix a poor cooling setup. Better cooling = fewer lockups.

I know what I'm about to say seems totally crazy, but I've now seen it on three seperate occasions with three seperate people but all with Via based motherboards. You don't say what your motherboard is, so maybe it doesn't pertain or maybe it's more than just one motherboard type.

About a year ago, I had an AthlonXP 2000+ that was overheating like crazy. It would get up to 50-60C without doing anything more than booting the computer and was starting to crash the computer quickly and often. It had been fine for the first several months that I had it, but then it just started overheating and locking up. The heatsink seemed to be fine and was on snuggly and was obviously absorbing heat because it wouldn't be warm, it would be HOT to the touch. After a week or so I just gave up and got another chip. Put the new chip in and everything was fine. I threw the old chip on a shelf... don't know why, but I didn't throw it away.

About 6-8 weeks ago, a friend started having similar lockup problems with his computer. He wasn't running a motherboard monitoring program, so he didn't immediately pick up on the temp problem. Instead, he began the process of reseating the PCI cards and memory, checking the Power Supply... all the normal stuff, but nothing worked. Finally, for the heck of it, he simply removed the CPU and then put it back into the socket and BINGO everything was fine! This reminded me of my CPU on the shelf.

So.... I took it over to a friend's house who has an nForce2 mobo but had an Athlon 1.2GHz CPU in it. I told him I wanted to try out the chip and if it worked, he could keep it as an upgrade (since I was only going to throw it out anyway). It's working just fine for weeks now with no sign of overheating or instability.

Another friend's computer was locking up and overheating (over Memorial Day weekend) and he decided to try out this trend of just removing and reseating just to see. It worked!

That's three for three with AthonXP's and VIA motherboards. I 'think' all the XP's were Palamino's, but I can't swear to it.

Let me know if you decide to just reseat it and what sort of mobo you have.... I'd be interested in the results.

interesting stuff thanks.

i'm running a GA-7VTXE+

the reason i think getting a new CPU *may* work, is that I'm considering that my 2100+ may have suffered some permanent damage due to the number of times it's already overheated and locked, maybe a transistor has burnt out or something obscure...

i came back from work today, the puter has been doing nothng all day except sitting in a room with no open windows, and it has locked. I think my cooling in the case is ok.

When I've been running just now, i've had 59C

I turned the pc off, waited 2 minutes then turned back on again and the exact same conditions gaver 55C

I had imagined that the cpu would settle down to exactly the same temperature when idle - but seems this might not be the case!

if my new cpu continues to lock i might just bite it and get a new mbd...I'm positive that the cooling is sufficient etc. I'm already on a fairly clean install and i've tried the usual memory swap stuff. I'm running a zalman (i think) low-noise psu (£60) so shd be no issues there!

for what it's worth i once had an old sound blaster in dos, the interrupts (autoexec/config.sys line) had messed up on it.

turned pc off, removed card, re-inserted card, booted up, problem solved.

things include

locking within 30 mins of playing unreal tournament and SW pod racer
locking within 10 seconds of starting a divx encode
locking within 1 second of using db converted to change an mp3 bitrate
locked a few times using lame encode for mp3s - towards the end of a file encode
locked occasionally when entering text into a website (msg board type thing)

all things which might point towards temperature, perhaps...?

new cpu installed and running.

it's about 60C at the moment..i suspect it might get several degrees warmer than this under other conditions.

have successfully converted an mp3 to a lower bitrate though. very happy. :)

i have an 80mm rear fan. both sides of the case are off at the moment (my comp has about £150 worth of silent pc kit installed :D no reason to add panels tbh). ambient temp is about 25, system temp (according to gigabyte SIV) is 45C (hmm) cpu is 62C at the moment.

Well, my system temp (that's your chipset's temp) is 35C, but then again, I have 3 case fans.;)

The room ambient where I game is 27 degrees C. My system temp is 28 Degrees C., and the CPU temp is 48 Degrees C under full load. I am at 2.324 Ghz on my XP2100+. I have two low speed 92 MM intake, and two low speed 80 mm exhaust fans. I'm about as silent as you can get and still game. The Ti-4200 card, stock fan is clearly audible over all the rest of the system.

qquartz, even silent cooling needs airflow over the heatsinks. With the panels off you get almost none. If you reinstall the panels, and a 92mm fan instead of the 80 mm fan that you are running, the volume should be about the same, but with significanly better airflow than no panels and 1 80mm fan.
