Hey gang,

I'm looking to upgrade my 2100+ Photoshop workstation/gaming rig (Ti4400 basically) with 1 Gig RAM to something more powerful....

1) Can i drop in an Athlon 64 on the Epox 8RDA+?

2) I assume Barton 2500+ overclocked to XP3000 speeds is best bet...?

3) I MAY even go RAID with two 120GB HDs (I have three...).. will this boost speed much? And is it hard to do? And do I have to wipe both drives first?

4) Thanks for your help. :)

Sincerely,

GS

ps. - any and all suggestions are welcome, so please share your thoughts. I work on files ranging anywhere from 40MB to 600MB, so another 512MB RAM and a CPU upgrade, and maybe RAID (like I said) are what I'm thinkin to be good moves to make.

1. Yes
2. Yes, unless you can get an Intel setup in that price range with the 2.4C since with Hyper Threading you get an advantage in video editing apps.
3. You can go Raid with all 3 if you'd like. I would look for Raid 5 since using 3 hard drives that will be the best.

You can't drop a Athlon 64 in the 8rda+ -- 100% no.

You talking about 300+ extra pins.

Unless there is a slocket type adapter that i haven't heard about?!?!

EDIT: I would also recommend the 1700+ - 2500+ and overclock, you are almost all but asured 2.2-2.3ghz.

From what I have read, the A64 uses a different socket (like 962 or something). Also, I think a lot of things will be different on the 64-bit boards (like chipsets etc), so the 32-bit boards probably wouldn't work even if you made some type of adapter (which would pretty much be immpossible anyway).

GratefullySaved, how much RAM + swap space are your big jobs using, have you noticed?

That would be the Opteron.
