XP1800 t-bred w/ PC2100 ddr? Any problem here?

Is PC2100 ddr ram too slow for an 1800 t-bred? Do I need PC2700? Gracias.

Well, PC2100 is only rated to 133 Mhz, the default FSB of the 1800+. So it will work, but if you were anticipating overclocking, your memory will limit your options. PC2700 is rated to 166 Mhz, and would give you more headroom for overclocking via the FSB.

if you are not ocing, then you are fine
if you are planning on ocing...then with crucial you can probably oc a bit anyways....just relax the timings and go for it

😉 TbredA only runs cooler but doesn't o/c better than Polly, hence XP2200+. TbredB not only runs cooler but should hit XP2800+ type speeds. IIRC Polly's are pigs to unlock, TbredA's are pretty easy and TbredB's are unlocked! If your CPU is marked AXDA1800DUT3C @ 1.60v you have TbredB (CPUID 6-8-1). Anyway, PC2100 is all you need unless your CPU hits XP2400+ type speeds, try unlocking and using the multiplier to keep FSB & RAM stock, it may not be worth investing cash in PC2700.

Newbie question,
T-Bred procecessors are so cheap now, I can get a chip the same speed of my current T-Bird c (1.4 ghz) for $52 on newegg, and I can get up to $30 on ebay for the old one. So, not including shipping, I can move ahead two generations for around $20. Is it worth it? Or am I being seduced by the allure of new hardware? 😉

if you plan to overclock why not lol
those are mad overclockers for hte most part (if you get a tbred b, they are insane ocers)

unless you want to wait for barton to drop some serious cash lol (it *should* be about a week or so away....maye 2)

😱 Depends what you do, your Athlon 1.4ghz is a nice match for your RAM (PC2100) and your gfx card (Rad8500). Considering the small cost of a Tbred it would make sesne, both TbredA & B will run a LOT cooler than your current CPU and A should hit XP2200+ while B should hit XP2800+ ... your mobo can handle the XP core (esp Tbred), 133/266FSB (if not 166/333FSB) and multiplier adjustment right? TbredA are easily unlocked while TbredB are unlocked by default. Ideally you would want a 166/333FSB with TbredB meaning PC2700 RAM and again ideally a better gfx card like GF4TI or Rad9500PRO+. Given the cost and so long as your mobo is willing I'd say GO FOR IT!

Well a new vid card and new ram probally aren't in the cards for me, but I did just buy a new mobo and hsf. My MSI K7 Master has a bug that MSI denies and the message board (msihardware.com) where people with the misfortune of owning one discussed workarounds was taken offline, and my heatsink was damaged (by me) and only does a mediocre job of cooling my very hot athlon 1.4.

I bought an Epox 8K5A2 and a Thermaltake Volcano 9.

If I did pick up a t-bred 1800 or 2200 (after barton is released and the price drops even further), would I see any serious advantage over my t-bird, other than overclockability? Is there a performance or stability benefit?

😉 The Tbreds will run cooler (even at XP2200+ speeds) but a Rad8500 won't be giving much gaming boost at all, although there will be some. Outside of gaming WIndows, apps and esp things such as encoding should all be noticably faster with a newer CPU. Checking up on Epox's website (I hate checking these things out) shows it is using the KT333+8235 (new PCI bus v.good) which is very cool although may or may not run Barton (biggest benefit of Barton is lowering the TbredB anyway). It can do 133/266FSB although it should have the divider for 166/333FSB it isn't certified. There's no need to run PC2700 RAM unless you're using 333FSB as with a slower FSB the gains are minimal anyway. It does allow you to set the multiplier which bodes well if you do fancy o/c'ing while keeping your PC2100 in spec. Here's the LINK (look under FAQs for the link to PDF of CPU compatibility). Checking the CPU compatibility with BIOS 9/3/02 you can run ALL Tbred up to XP2200+ and also the XP2600+ (so not XP2400+, XP2700+ or XP2800+ and prob not 333FSB either). GO FOR IT!
