XP1800+ and Volcano 7 o/c ing?

I've had my XP1800+ and a Volcano 7 (not 7+) and I've just put the FSB as 137MHZ since I didn't want to damage anything (yet 😀) , but I also wanted to say I overclocked it 😛. I have an MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU, which is a solid board for me, and I was wondering if anyone has overclocked an XP1800+ with a Volcano 7, because I don't know how far is too far. The sensor on the HSF is near teh outside, and I read a review about it saying that if you have a hot internal case temp. then the HSF will go faster, but if you have a cool case, then it won't spin at full speed. I don't mind about speed, and I have a bunch of case fans in there, ready to put more in today when I get some switches. I think it also said that you could cut off the sensor to make it go at full speed all the time, but I lost the URL for the article 🙁

Anyways, what I'm really asking is:
If I overclock my CPU, how far is too far, what temperature is good for the CPU when it's o/c 'd, and any tips...
So far I've only tinkered with the FSB speed, since I don't know much about the vcore and all of that...
Thanks for reading 🙂
(I have a 300 watt antec PS, and the computer is named 'BabyCow'😉)

the Volcano 7 isnt the best HSF out there, but should get you by, at least @1.74Vcore

a 145 fsb is a nice comfortable overclock , generally speaking.

more of course is better , but puts more strainb on the system, not the CPU so much ,but the AGP/PCI buses, they become "out of spec"
that is they run higher and their devices do and they are often what cant handle it rather then your CPU

to get 150fsb and beyond you will probably need to unlock your CPU, but maybe not if your system can hack it

your mobo has the KT333 chipset and so therefore has a 1/5 divisor which will kick in at 166

a litle experiement you can try if you feel your CPU is doing well, is to raise your Vcore to max, around 1.9V and the up your fsb to 166/7

that way all your devices will be in spec, just the CPU wil be upped and the mem speed too

if it doesnt boot, then you know either the ram cant handle 166mhz or your CPU cant handle 1909 mhz

probably wont but be fun trying.

upping your Vcore is only for when you need those extra few mhz of fsb, but it does increase heat greatly, so watch that if you decide to up it.

other then that,

good luck and happy overclocking 😀

PS dont forget to run Prime95 to test your CPU/mem for stability, bout 10-1 hour will do pending how strick you are

thanks for your help!
I don't know if I want to up everything just yet😉
but thanks for taking hte time to help me out!

no worries champ!!

its good to see someone enter the world of overclocking

you do know its addictive, dont you ?? 😉

I tried upping the FSB from 137 (where i've had it) to 145, and it booted until where the dekstop would normally show up, it BSOD on me, and same thing at 140, so i put it back to 137...could it be caused by it being locked? how would I go about unlocking it? Also, in the BIOSit has where the multiplier is set at auto, but can be changed...would it be wise to change this? (at 11.5 now, but higher is always better 😀)
It says my CPU temp is about 40-41 degress Celsius, but I don't know if I can trust that since the sensor is away from the CPU... (it says it;'s about 4000RPM incase that matters too 🙂)
thanks for the help!!

that is a pretty poor performing chip,
still hold hop as it could be your memory

make sure your memory is set to the lowest settings so you can rule it out of the equation

might be wise to run GoldMemory at the fsb you BSOD at
you can find that at the same link as Prime95 above ^

it runs in DOS environment so Windows ill performing wont be the issue

you can unlock it,
rather easier then most think it is. but first find out if its worthwhile, if you find it is infact your CPU stalling at 140fsb, then no need to unlock it

if you change your mulitplier on a LOCKED chip it wont post!
so leave that allow until/if you unlock it

but first find whats stopping you at 140
fingers crossed its your RAM and some better rAM will see you off and away

by any chance do you know the stepping code of your Athlon ??

1) I don't know the stepping code of my processor, but, would this have it? I got this info from Sandra 2002, and hopefully it will tell you, since I don't know 😱
2) the RAM I have in there is a 1 chip 512MB Samsung Chip PC2100. I haven't overclocked it, or tweaked it's settings at all, since I'm not familiar with that yet (YET 😉), if that's what you mean by lowest settings, or do you mean underclocking the RAM?

I definitely won't change the multiplier then, and THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!
It is GREATLY appreciated

no unfortunately, the steppings i was after is more the batch information,
next time you have your HSF off, write down all the info on the die core.

if you have AGOIA0206 (week6 2002)
or
AGOIA0216 (week 16 2002)

then you should be able to get more out of it 😕

how old is your chip??
generally speaking young is better.

that could be very good ram you have, but you need to check if you have Samsung printed on the actually PCB module,

like this

[L=]http://www2.gol.com/users/postbox/Samsung2.jpg[/L]

you'll see the one on the right in the second picture is a non genuine samsung module, it has a thrid party PCB with the great Samsung chips,
this often means not very good overclocking.

having said all that a 140-15 fsb should be achievable

have you tried GoldMemory on your RAM yet @140fsb??

and no worries mate!
glad i can help 😀

ok;

1) I bought the processor April 28th, retail packaging. I don't think I'll have the HSF off the processor anytime soon though....
2) I remember now that I got Infineon RAM since the guy I bought it from (computer show) was out of Samsung...sorry 'bout that 😱
3) Tried running GoldMemory, and I didn't expect it to take as long as it was going to, and someone restarted my computer somewhere during the process :frown:. I'll run it overnight tonight (in about 2 hours, since it's 9:10 here right now 🙂)

oh ok,
then i would start suspecting the RAM then,
not a bad brand, but not really desgined for much more then spec,
you could be lucky though 🙂

you will know straight away if the RAM sux!

i had some settings that failed GoldMem in a minute.

remember to set your FSB up to where if fails to boot Windows at when ya run GoldMem
AND
right clcik the Batch file on your GoldMemory floppy and click edit

make this :

@PROMPT $P$G
@ECHO OFF
@GM.EXE GM.RPT /Q
@REM GM.EXE GM.RPT /Q /D

look like this:

@PROMPT $P$G
@ECHO OFF
@GM.EXE GM.RPT
@REM GM.EXE GM.RPT /Q /D

the quick test only tests 32 bit, not 16 and 8 bit,

i found that some settings would clear the quick so i thought it was ok, but ran it again with a normal/full test and it failed 8 bit and/or 16bit

good luck!

ok, I changed that and will run GoldMemory tonight. I'll take a picture of it with my dig. camera, so if I don't comprehend the results, the maybe you'll be able to understand it 🙂

its easy

if it still says "PASSED" when ya wake up and its still running ya fine

if it is in red writing and saying "FAILED"

then ya RAM is up the s#!t!!
😀

let's see....
it says 9:10:35/2 75% Normal/PASSED

🙂 so far so good....but 9 hours, and it's not done!?!?!
bajeezuz...luckily, I'm going out of the house for a couple hours, so hopefully it'll finish..hopefully

what the heck....I ran the test, and it came up to Passed for all 3 tests after 16 hours..but, I had set the FSB to 142, and I forgot to set it back...restarted...and it booted into windows fine (i'm on this computer)...yet, last time, it locked at 140. I checked Motherboard Monitor, and it registers at 1639Mhz, so it obviously is set that fast....weird..

good stuff,

maybe the memory needed a little burning in,

and with Goldmemory going for so long, i think it loops itself,
i nkow only the registered version is suppose to support looping, but i have seen it once, hit 100% and start again,
should only take bout 1-2 hours for one loop, pending how much RAM etc

ok, cool 🙂
I have 512MB DDR memory, so maybe that's why it took so long...
maybe you're right about the burn in...hmm...I might need to test higher FSB speeds now 😀
