I am setting up a HTPC/ media server that will be used for watching Divx, playing and serving MP3s, playing emulator games and other normal tasks. I doubt this machine will ever really be used heavily and I want it quiet with low power consumption. I am trying to decide which hardware I should keep and use for it and which I should sell. I am planning on running an Abit KT7 with either an Athlon 1100 or Athlon XP 1700 at 1.1GHz (11x100mhz). How low could I set the voltage for the 1700 on this mobo if it will even run? I will be running the processor with a Volcano 7. It would be nice if it would run passive, but I guess I will probably have to use an extra 18cfm NMB. Which processor would you use?

Thanks,
Brian

The Xp1700 at Xp1700 speed. There' no reason to undervolt. A thermalright + NMB fan will be enough. Your power supply and hard drives will make a lot more noise than that!

I have a p4 and p3 HTPC and honestly, once their stuck under the TV you can't hear them, so don't bother sacrificing any speed for passive cooling :)

The stock wattage on a 1700+ tbred is 49.35
The athlon 1.1 is 60
Go with the 1700+... You really shouldn't need to underclock it.
But if you did set it to 1.1ghz it would have an estimated wattage of 35.

Actually, there is. The KT7 will only run at 100mhz FSB. Maybe more like 110mhz, but still.
