Anyone tried using this combo? I'm getting extremely high temperatures (50C) being reported when I check the temperature. Outside temperature is 22C. I'm not sure if it's just the heat sink not making contact with the processor properly (I heard that there are possibly issues with using heatsinks designed for the previous generation of Athlon's with the new XP processors - I don't know if there's any truth to it or not...) Anyone have any ideas of why the temp is so high? I just got my CPU yesterday and I don't really wanna fry it just yet... :)

syee,

You must have improperly installed your SK-6 on a XP processor. The orientation of installing the SK6 on a t-bird should be the same as a XP processor. SK-6 is a beautiful cooler, works the best, and keeps my T-bird at very low temperature (see my sig below..) and my P3 1000E.. it's icy cold at idle.. However there's something you have to watch out when installing the SK-6. I heard this from people too.. you might have to switch the clip at opposite direction so it can sit right above the pressure point of the HS and the CPU core. And there's one more thing you have to do.. placing the HSF in such a way that it would be sit nice and even and making full contact with the CPU. I can't explain this part very well.. I have done it such a way that it is getting the full contact and it's working so beautifully. =)

I guess I'll try re-orienting it. I'm using Artic Silver with it also. I think i may have put a little too much on there, coz it was sitting at around 35C before I took the heatsink off so I could work on the mobo. I reapplied some more thermal compound after I put it back on...don't know if this could be part of the problem...

<< milk powder,

wtf? how is that p3 1000e that high w/ just an SK-6?
>>

haha.. :D first of all, the CPU is very good. It's a cD0 stepping, SL5QV S-Spec code. These chips overclock insanely high.

Second, the SK-6 pure copper is definitely helping in both idle and load temp. Im just using a Delta 38cfm on it. This HSF is better than you may think.. =)

Third, some extensive burn-in on the CPU. Partially with my luck and effort burning in, it gave me a jump from 1400 to 1420 to run stably. For more info, you can click on "my rig".

Foruth, many others are running the same type of CPU at 1333 and upto 1380. Some of them are afraid of bumping the voltage higher so they are stuck at where they are at. ofcourse their HSF isn't good as the SK-6. :p

Even more good news is that this CPU has potential.. My current Slotket doesn't offer Vcore more than 2.00. Right now I am at 2 volts to run it stable. I tried bumping it up to 1430- 1440 and guess what.. made it to POST and almost finished loading windows but it's keep saying "I NEED MORE VOLTAGE!!!!!" give me more voltage and I'll go. hahaha I am serious. The temp at 1420 is darn cool enough and I still have more room to overclock higher.. I just need more voltage. Once I get the voltage increase taken care of, I will post back here with 1430- 1450mhz. we'll see.. haha =)

Was just reading the "Sucking or blowing" thread just then and decided to check out what my fan was doing...found out it was sucking the air out. Anyways, flipped the fan over so it blows...I'll wait and see how it turns out. Also, the SK6 can really only be mounted in one direction. The groove for the clip doesn't really allow you to put it any other direction.
