Here is a link for recommended Athlon Power Supplies:
AMD PS

ENLIGHT EN-72370X3C4 MEDIUM ATX TOWER CASE with 300Watts Power Supply is a good case in that price range. May be more around $50-55 but will be good for your setup and you would not have to upgrade later as your system changes.

The extra $15 will save you $50+ later. IMHO!

Case quality is much more important to the system than many realize.

It really depends on the power supply. Good 250w power supplies is adequate for certain systems around that range. Bad ones aren't. There is no real way of finding out unless you try it, but I would recommend that you not try it. If anything, get 300w and try to get it from a brand name company.

If she's upgrading from a 486, why even bother with an XP 1600+? That's way more power than she's used to, and much more expense than necessary.

Pick her up a 800 Duron and motherboard from the KT133A era... some cheap PC-100 RAM and that'll save you some cash...

She's not a gamer apparently, or she would have upgraded a long time ago...

For a basic computer that will be functional you may be better off to buy a system from a reputable online dealer. I picked up an Athlon 1GHz, 256 MB RAM, 30 GB HDD, 810 LMR MB, everything but a monitor for under $400 shipped.
At the time I couldn't build one that cheap. Not a gamer by any means but good for general apps.
