Ok,

So I'm sure this has been asked thousands of times but my searches have not proved all that valuable.

I'm getting 48 degrees C in MBM5 on sensor 2 using the CPU diode. I have an Asus A7V8X, AMD XP1600+ running at stock, Thermaltake Volcano 9 @ 3000rpm (I have it on the variable setting) and 3 case fans - 1 front, 1 back and 1 side.

This is NOT under load. I've read about ideal temps for AMD Athlons and it looks as though 40-45 would be ideal - any ideas why mine is runnning hotter? I'm using Artic Silver 3 aswell. Sensor 1 on MBM5 says 29 degrees C using Asus 1 on the options in the temperature section - this is the motherboad temp.

I looked at the heatsink installation before I built the rest of the PC and it all looked fine. One corner of the CPU was SLIGHTLY raised but only at the edge and the die was flat with the heatsink bottom. I'm not saying that the heatsink is not horizontal - it is, but I did notice one corner of the CPU was raised a bit. I reinstalled the heatsink a couple of times but it was the same and yes, i did install it correctly

Anyone got any suggestions or comments. Is it just because I am running the Volcano @ 3000rpm? I plan o/c'ing so I want some headroom in the temp department.

I've just done Prime95 torture test and I'm getting 55 under load! This is at stock speed as well!

Cheers everyone, I know this must be a very common question.

I'd say you probally figured it out, Not sure what kind of base the Volcano9 has... or how big the fan is. But 3000RPMs for a 60mm fan doesn't push much air. Your airflow seems to be decent, as your board temp is 29.

I'm assuming you are running a stock voltages?

I'd say your prime culprit is slow fan, or the HS base doesn't transfer heat well.

Try bumping up the fan speed to max settings for a bit, and see where the temps go.

Temps. sound about in spec - nothing out of the ordinary there. That Volcano9 @ 3000RPM is a 60mm fan? (I use AX-7), I would throw on something bigger then like an 80mm or fool around in that direction to see if you temps go down.

Im using a volcano 9 right now. Its a 80mm Tt smartfan II. The orange thing. It PUMPS! :Q lots of airflow....

Copper heat spreader, aluminum heat sink, 80mm fan. at 3000 rpm it should be pushing maybe at the least 35 cfm. At full speed mine runs at about 5200 even though Tt says it runs at 4800 max. THe fan couldnt be the problem........

You say it was being read off the internal diode IN the CPU core? If so 48 degrees isnt all that bad....

if your board is reading the on die temp then you should be fine.

on die temp is more accurate and generally runs 10-15 degrees warmer than the socket thermosisitor.

my on die temp 1600 agoia at 2100 (1.743 mhz) is 45-49 idle 53 to 56 load (video encoding) 8k5a2 using cheap cooper heatsink

these puppies are rated up to 70 degrees anyway

55 under load is not all that bad, mine will hit 55 if my room temp is near 80.The main thing to look for,is your comp is stable?

Ah, I thought the V9 used a 60mm fan, not an 80mm, my mistake.

A 60mm fan spinning at 3000 RPMs would not push much air, so I assumed that was the culprit.

I really don't see anything wrong with his temps, but they are a big higher than they should be for a non-OCed AthlonXP1600, with a "High-Performance" HSF.

Since he averages around 48Idle, and 55 Full Load. They are high compared to mine (Averages at 49C Full Load), and I'am running my AXP 1.4 @ 1.9ghz, 1.9V Core, 2.8VDimm. Room/House Temp is about 78F, so its pretty warm. I'm using an Alpha PAL8045 w/ a 52CFM 80mm fan.
