XP, XPpro or windows 2000?????

Hey guys I have a virgin amd1900+ any suggestions on what os to use.
Things I do 1)surf
2)word processing & some cad/cam
3) I hope cool games
4) video & photos

I own Windows XP Pro. I like it, no crashes so far.

Well, your CPU is certainly big enough to handle either OS. I presume you have enough memory and a good graphics card too. I've heard some great reviews for Win 2000. However, XP Pro is the next release up form Win 2000. My two cents worth says to go with XP pro. I recently installed the full version of XP Pro, it meets with my approval.

I would have to agree with the aforementioned. Definitly go with XP Pro. I sense you really want some cool games, they will run better on XP if you do get them from Santa.

Well, unless you need to connect to a Domain or something, I would say XP Home. The two really aren't that far apart, and UNLESS you have to have it I would say go with home. I have had to play with both at my office and home is just about identical, with the only really big thing being the domain issue and the way security is handled.

I still like Win2K, just because of WinXP's annoying cursor acceleration. 99% of the people don't notice the difference though.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm going to use my rig almost exclusively for gaming, tho. I have a GeForce3 and will be putting together a 1.33@1.5 T-bird/Iwill KK266 combo for it. Is XP actually a better gaming platform than 2000?

Zodder, speaking only from my personal experience, I havent had any problems with games in 2K nor XP.

Unlike what some people seem to think, 2K doesnt have a compability tool as well, only it isnt installed by default, it's on the CD.
It works very good, I've had a few games that have complained about not working on NT(Motorhead comes to mind), but the compability tool took care of them nicely.

But if you dont have either and will be buying new, just go XP; once you turn the crap off, its like 2K with a few enhancements.

Looking at your hardware you should have no problem whatever you choose. As for choosing between XP Home and XP Pro this may help.

Whichever you choose, perform a clean install.

- From what your needs are I don't see any problem going XP home. And if you are dissatisfied you can purchace the "Step Up" version to get XP Professional. I don't see why these people are advising that you throw away extra money for features you probably won't even touch.

- Yes, It seems XP is a better gaming OS, it seems to eliminates that terrible mouse lag while playing games like Max Payne and UT under Windows 2000. You might notice a frame rate reduction of a few frames, but whos gonna notice if you have a good video card?

I was thinkin the same thing and see that alot.....must be because "PRO" sounds cooler.

If u're buying new, XP Pro by all means. Nothings wrong with it except it's price, but 2000 pro is no cheaper than XP Pro to buy so I'd go for XP Pro. It's great!
