I am happy with win2k,and it is very stable and all.Should i upgrade to xp or wait a year or so for the inevitable service packs/updates/patches that will follow xp's release?

I upgraded from 2k to XP last week and I have to say it looks a lot cooler, but it seems slower, especially browsing the net. It just dosen't feel as fast.

XP is nice! If you're building from scratch, install XP. If you already have win2k, you may want to hold off until your next meltdown. The new features aren't enough to make XP a must-have, but the new capabilities are nice.

This is a true statement! 100% in agreement here.

I'm messing with XP right now, and really like it.. It has been stable, and the GUI is ... different, but you get used to it. But if Win2K is working great for you, then I wouldn't upgrade.

The difference between XP and 2K pro: XP is the ugly cartoon version of win2k pro, Dont waste your time.

I was also skeptical of XP until I tried it (and yes, the "cartoonish" look turned me off a bit)...BUT

Now that I've installed it...High Res. never looked so good...the new font stuff alone is amazing.

And to those who aren't going to give it a shot because the default look...change it, sheesh.

Stability is on par with Win 2K Pro and everything seem to run as quick or better than 2K, imo.

Plus, if you can get a corp. version, nothing to activate ;)

Edit: I especially liked the fact that when I finished a fresh install...I had zero drivers to install and everything worked perfectly.
PIII800, SB Live, GF2GTS, 512MB RAM...then again, I've never had the curse of an unstable system...
And while I used to be a system tweaking madman, my time is too precious to troubleshoot for hours or days on end.

2nd Edit: Oh yeah, until I saw with my own eyes the crappy 2D I had with my GF2...I thought anything higher than 1024x768 was just too fuzzy.
Now, I'm at 1280x1024 and it's crystal clear.

If you have Win2K with no problems don't change. It is not worth the money. If you have anything else it is worth the money unless you have a crappy system.

I've loaded XP on several systems. Some of the guys here at work are taking the beta XP exam in 2 days and they're all cramming for it.

I have yet to see a "must have" feature in XP. It looks and sounds prettier, but it takes up over a gig to install it and then you have to deal with the memory issues. If you have 256mb you'll do ok - but anything less and XP bogs. If you have under a 500mhz cpu, you're going to suffer a little due to the fact that XP is so graphic intensive.

One of my friends messaged me a few weeks ago (This guy is one of those people who buys things just to say they have them) and asked me:

him "Dude, have you loaded XP on your system yet??!?"
Me "Nope"[/b]
Him "Why not!?!? It r0x0rs j00r b0x0rs!!"[/b]
Me "I've had XP since the first beta. I have RC2 sitting on my desk right now. My system actually dual boots XP, but I haven't booted into it for weeks. There simply aren't any ground breaking features in XP not to mention that ATI drivers still suck for NT OS's"[/b]
him "Oh no way dude, it rules so much! U gotta see what it looks like! It even runs all my games![/b]
Me "Wow, 98 does that for me"[/b]
him "..."

<< Its based on NT kernel right? >>

Yup, 5.1 to be precise. Win2k is 5.0, so WinXP is just a minor change compared to Win2k. Nothing major.
