Can anyone steer me in the right direction on how to determine what software is causing this problem? i just built a new computer and i KNOW that it shutdown ok after i installed all the drivers, and flashed the mobo. this only started when i started to install all the adware, spybot, and AVG software, along with BF2 and some other nicknack programs. is there anyway i can check an error log or create one? so i cant tell what is causing the pc to reboot after its told to shutdown?.

1) Disable the "Automatically restart" checkbox under System failure:

control Panel > system > advanced > performance > settings

2) Check the Event Viewer for problems

start > run > Eventvwr.msc

3) See if you can complete 2 passes of Memtest86+ since it's a new build and you need to test for stability. If you pass memtest boot back into Windows and run Stress Prime for 2 hours without an error.

cool ill give that a shot. what should i be looking for in the event viewer? whats wierd is that it did shutdown before i installed some software on it. i hope its something easy, doubt it though.

by the way i unchecked the system restart and it still restarted, i saw alot of ATI errors in the event log. so im gonna try to uninstall this WARCAT driver, and just download another one that is more stable, and see if that helps.

well ive googled about this til my eyes where red before posting here, and all of the problems involved errors BEFORE XP shutdown. but i dont have any errors at shutdown. those ati erros were during runtime, not shutdown, i went back and noticed the times.

well Brazen, i have to hand it too you, after noticing that your link had different search criteria than what i used, i clked on it and the first page i found the answer. after reading a few of the problems i finally came to one that stuck out in my mind, it was about ethernet issues. i remembered updating my ethernet driver (along with the whole MS SM bus driver probs) and i went in to the mycomputer/manage/device manager/(my ethernet device)/properties/advanced and disabled "wake from system shutdown" then i shutdown xp and it finally did what it was supposed to do. So thanks a million Brazen!! i was searching for exact phrase matches, so that was my first mistake i guess. anyway, im sure this feature has its uses but i cant think of one, plus i dont know why it would install with this feature set enabled as default, anyway, it fixed my problem. thanks for all the input.
