XP won't recognize data CDs

Okay... so here's the deal. I built a computer for a friend using an ASUS NForce board and AMD CPU. After installing Windows XP Pro, it won't read data CDs from the Pioneer DVD or Sanyo CD-RW to install the right bus drivers, ethernet, etc... Can someone shed some light on this?
