work laptop is a Thinkpad T400 w/ 2gb ram that has been having freezing & blue-screen issues doing random, simple things, sometimes just from un-idling. I can move the mouse, but nothing responds and the screen is slow to respond, if at all. Corporate IT thought it was the beginning of an OS corruption so I commuted 3hrs roundtrip so they can re-image it. I brought it home last night, loaded windows (slow to get into Windows), then started to resume the PGP whole disk encryption (required by corp security), but it froze in the middle of it. So I powered-off and cold-booted again - and it won't even go into WinXP anymore... it is stuck at "Windows is starting up..." (just before I get the user/passwd prompt). Try a few more times and it either gets stuck there or shows nothing but the win background and the cursor - little to no hdd light activity.
Safe mode works fine, boots up. I disabled all startup services except for windows stuff, and it still halts at the same place, "windows is starting up...".
I try last known good configuration, halts at same place.
I go to the recovery console, but it blue screens. unmountable_boot_volume ... STOP: 0x000000ED
I run chkdsk, and it freezes at random places, sometimes 80%, sometimes 91%, of step1. So I can't even finish that.
I try an XP bootup disk, and while it's loading drivers (before it gives me any options), it blue screens.
Not sure what else I can do from here... other than give it back to IT which is not easy since they're far away.
Is this a hardware issue? They ran chkdsk on the drive when I handed it to them and the results were fine.
EDIT>> Ugh... now safe mode won't load... it scrolls the list of .sys files and gets stuck at agp440.sys every time.
