Mobo: ASUS A7n8x
CPU: Sempron 2400
HDD: WD 80 Gig
RAM: 256 DDR 400

Could someone please assist.

I have a A7N8x Mobo that previously worked with a 2400 Athlon (Barton). I have just changed it to a sempron 2400 and now cannot install XP. It hangs at the start of the install screen.

I can install and run 98SE - no problems.

I installed XP on this HDD on another (very similar) computer, however when I put the HDD into this computer it hangs.

I tried a different HDD (20Gig). Same problem. I can install 98SE, but it hangs for XP. If I Install XP on another computer it works fine on that computer, but on this one it hangs.

The bios is flashed to 1010 for sempron from asus site.

What am i doing wrong?

Please help

You could try only having in the bare essentials and then load up xp, for example, video card, cpu mem, NO sound, nic,or any other type hardware

Sorry for the slow reply ... easter holidays are good.

I have tried using only the mobo, hd, cd, ram, video card, mouse, keyboard. It is still the same. It doesnt boot even when the drive is fully installed and working on a similar computer (a7v600 mobo with 2400 athlon cpu using the above hd, cd, ram, video etc). However it will boot and even install 98se just will not play the game for xp professional so I am not sure what to try next.

The bios is correctly identifying the cpu (i have flashed the bios to suit the semron cpu).

Do you have any further thoughts that may assist?

thanks for your help so far

try running your hdrive utility from the manufacturer and/or writing zeros to drive.
also try switching ram on mb
had similar problems last week on a brand new wd se drive, drive ended up being bad

Problem Solved.

I bought a different Mobo - Asus A7v880 --- used all my other parts and it installed and ran perfectly. Does that mean the original Mobo is fried? --- if so why does it work ok on 98 --- but not xp.

A new mobo was actually cheaper than getting a quote to see if the old one was ok, let alone any repairs

thanks for your help
