XP won't burn CDs

I have no idea why, but after dragging whatever files I'd like to into the empty recordable CD folder and click on the "write these files to CD" link, nothing happens except a beep or bump sound (however you want to describe it). If I eject the disc, without writing the files, then the wizard will finally come up saying it "Could not complete the CD Writing Wizard" (or something to that effect), at which point I can reinsert the blank CD and continue on with the wizard.....but why the hell won't the wizard pop up when it should???

This all happens regardless of if the IMAPI service is in manual, automatic, started, stopped, etc...(obviously not disabled).

I'm confused.

..I've been using windows media in xp to burn cd's..after the the list is complete you have to right click each selsction and select "add to burn list" or something similar..but it works.

Well, WMP is only going to burn audio files and I don't have nero. I just wanted to use the built in option for XP since they were simple, easy, don't cost me extra $$$....and it SHOULD work by principle.

Right now I have roxio installed (since that's what came with my burner)....sigh.

Roxio could be screwing with it if it's an old version, I seem to remember there being a problem with that. Also, take a look in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning Are there any files in there (temp burn location)? If so, delete them (may have to boot to safe mode to do so) and try the wizard again.

It's version 6 basic. I'll get rid of Roxio and try that. I wonder is uninstalling/reinstalling the service could help. Any clues on how to do that?

Well, I uninstalled roxio, set the IMAPI service to automatic (it was on manual before) and checked that folder...it didn't exist.
Any ideas?

Is there a way to uninstall/reinstall one particular service like IMAPI? I think something fubared with it.
