I have windows XP Pro on a AMDXP1800+ system w/ PC2100 memory (crucial 256mb), recently upgraded from W2K Pro

Problem is it will not let me install or run windows when i have more than 256mb memory... Says that a certain file is missing when I have 512mb or 768mb of ram installed, which is kinda weird. When I have 256mb ram installed on the mb, this will not happen. I figure it wouldn't be memory error because W2K booted up, and didn't see anything like this on microsoft.com... Memory is installed on the correct slots, Gigabyte motherboard. Any ideas?

it does this regardless of which sticks U take out? It looks like U have 3 256MB sticks, right? So if you use ANY of the 3 by itself its fine, but otherwise it doesn't boot?

Also, your not oiverclocking right? and I'd try going in the bios and making all the RAM timings as slow as possible...

Reset Bios and things worked fine, except now it won't accept more than 512mb. However i narrowed it down to 1 memory module that was defective (won't boot with that bad one on in conjunction with any amount of memory, and won't boot with itself. Shows a page load error when loading up XP.

Funny thing is, the chip was crucial from Newegg and not sure if I should send to crucial or newegg.

Give Newegg a call. Their CS department is pretty good and will let you know what you need to do as far as getting it replaced.

I had that same problem also due to a bad 256mg stick of Crucial pc2100. Since I bought it direct from them back in Sept. I rma'd it and got a new one back within a week. Great company. :)
