XP won't auto standby

XP will enter standby completely and correctly whenever I initiate it, and it will wake up successfully also. However, it seems to have trouble tracking idle time or something. If I set it to standby after a certain time, it sometimes works but more often does not. In the cases when it does not work, the event viewer doesn't show any events corresponding to the time at which I expected it to autostandby.

Any ideas on what I should try?

I've seen this issue on some XP machines and it's often baffling how it will behave properly some days and decide to stubbornly stay out of standby on others. Most recently, I seem to have alleviated the problem by disabling the iTunes helper service that was installed when my GF got an iPod. Since doing that, it seems to click over to standby mode and hibernate after 45 minutes reliably.

I can't say I've had a single standby/hibernation issue on any of my Vista PCs. They all work great. I love having the machines go into standby mode and fully hibernate and power off within 30-45 minutes of me walking away from the computer.

It seems to work if I close all the applications (although this defeats the purpose of standby a little). I'll try to figure out which app was causing the issue and report back.
