XP wireless systray icon shows red X, but it is connected?

I've got a machine running XP with a linksys wireless G card. The icon in the systray shows a red X alot of the time indicating that the wireless is not connected, but it is connected.

Has anyone run into this sort of thing? Any ideas how to fix this would be appreciated.

Thanks,
BGC

I have seen this when sometimes the 3rd party vendor wireless management software is used to connect to the wireless instead of the built in windows function

Is this a Microsoft provided icon (don't know of one for wireless connections, only wired) or is it Linksys provided one?

option 1. Both Wire and Wireless connections are Enabled and only one is actually Connected.

Option 2. A 3rd part Wireless utility is loaded at Startup and display an Icon.

Many new Wireless Laptops and Wireless ready Desktops come with a configuration that loads the Original Wireless manufacturer’s Utility at Startup.

The Wireless connection can be maintained only by one agent; as a result most of these utilities are programmed to switch Off Windows Zero Configuration (WZC).

Sounds like whatever the manufacturer of your wireless card is managing your wireless. This will show a red "x" on the windows icon as windows is not managing the wireless.

I've got XP managing the wireless connection. I did have the linksys utility doing it when I first installed it monthis ago but it kept losing the profile for the connection so I changed it to XP's built in wireless. I don't recall if I uninstalled the linksys app or not. I do remember it had a choice to switch from it to XP wireless in the menu. I'll have to check to see if the linksys app is still installed when I get a chance.

I do know the systray icon is different than the one that was there when the linksys app was managing the wireless so I assumed it was an XP icon. When you point at it with the mouse, and the red X is not there, it pops up a little box that says it's connected to the router at 54Mbps with Excellent signal strength.
