XP will not shut down

:disgust: When I go to shut down or restart Winxp the only thing that happens is that my cursur blinks once. In order to turn off my computer I have to manually hold the power button for six seconds. Does anyone have suggestions???

It wants to prove to you it can run forever without shutting down.

Seriously, though, I can't say I've ever seen this happen.

Anyone?

PresidenteJeremy I haven't seen XP do that yet but I have plenty of times with Win98. Anyway, here are a number of suggestions from Microsoft for such situations. Hopefully you'll find some solution in this long page of info.

Good luck.

Any programs running in the background that may be hanging it up? Is this something that just started, Or has it been like this all along?

Yup, sounds like a process is hanging. Can you log off?

I cant log off either, the only way i can shut down is to hit ctl-alt-del, then switch user from the shutdown menu, then when it gets to the switch user screen i can shutdown. What I recently did was uninstall my SBLive drivers and reinstalled drivers from win xp cd. This is because I was experiencing problems with creative's crappy driver and windows recommended to delete that and install from their disk. I know that this is what caused it. I am trying to find a prog that will help me remove all driver components from the sound card, then start from scratch. I have heard of programs that you can use when switching video cards that will help get rid of all old drivers, but cant remember what they were. Damn I want a  , this is a pain in the arse...

See what process is causing the problem. I have 2 Win2k Pro boxes out of dozens of boxes that have diffculity with shutdown/logout, because of Norton Antivirus bug that isn't compatible with the hardware.

I have the same problem with my xp machine. I can log off of my user, then select the option to shutdown from the login screen. after it gets done saving the settings, etc., it just hangs and I have to hold the power button. I have been putting up with it for long enough, so now I am just going to reinstall since I bought a new board.

I have a brand new system i just built and it started that. I had to hold down the power button to shut down. And yes I just got a MX duo keyboard mouse. Must be it.

By the way I love my MX Duo mouse and keyboard.

Yep. Here is a link. I think it is only the newest version that causes the problem. I also have the MX duo but did not install the software.
