XP will not put monitor in standby

Don't know why, suddenly, XP will not turn off the monitor anymore even though I've set it to in the power options in the control panel.

Before anyone suggests, I have no spyware, adware, malware, virus, trojan, etc. in the background.

[*]Does the device manager show ACPI or standard under computer?
[*]Do you have an APM tab in the power options properties? If so check it.

ACPI yes
APM tab no

I really don't know, it's always worked before, but not once in the past week. Kinda hoping it has happened to someone else who's been able to fix it, to offer some suggestions. I've still got a big crt, and it's nice when it's not putting out all the heat when I forget to turn it off. That's all.

Try updating your video drivers.

(remove old ones > reboot to safe mode > run driver cleaner > reboot to normal > install new)

Unloaded, used driver cleaner, reloaded the latest drivers (nvidia 6600gt). Nothing. Same with using a diagnostic startup with msconfig. I watched it here, when the time comes to turn the monitor off, the screen does go black for an instance, but goes right back to the desktop.

I guess maybe I'm looking at reloading Windows. Or maybe finally learning out how to integrate sp2 onto the xp cd so I can do a repair install.

For now I've got to relearn how to remove the "Play On My" option in the context menu. I really wish they'd make that an option in the gui...

Thanks for all the help. I created a second profile, and even with everything loading on startup, XP does turn the monitor off there, so the problem has got to be something in this one profile. So I'll just use the files & settings transfer wizard to move all my settings to the other profile, see how that works.

This current profile definately has something weird with it right now. I had the timer to shut the monitor off set at 1 min so I can test it out (normally have it at 25 min). Anyways, now it's stuck, no matter what I set the power options to, after 1 min of no activity XP kicks me back to the logon screen, not logged out, but like if I had clicked the switch user option.

I'll just go ahead and move everything to the other profile for now.

EDIT - I guess that's just how XP works when it goes into standby, sends you back to the logon screen. I've never had more than one profiles to really know what happens.

Anyways, I am just going to finish setting up the other profile and consider the problem fixed. I'll reload Windows sometime in the future when I've got more time to spare. Thanks again.

It seems something got goofed up between the power options, and the screensaver settings. I've never used a screensaver. For some reason, it got switched on, set to turn on after 1 minute of inactivity, just as I had set the power options to.

Now that I've turned off the screensaver, the power options to put the monitor into standby mode works as it should, in all profiles with the normal startup options. So looks like I don't have to switch to another profile after all. I'll still plan to reload Windows from scratch later when I have the time.
