XP will not boot fully.......need some help

Posts
Can get into Bios
Can boot into safe mode
It boots past the "Windows is loading screen"...... then black screen (sometimes with a mouse cursor)
Nothing else after that

Built the computer in my sig back in Nov 06 and have had zero problems 'till now....

Saw that there was going to be a Thunderstorm in the early morning hours lastnight so I shut down the computer early and unplugged everything, including the phone line to the modem. Nothing was connected (power wise) to the computer.

I went to power it on about an hour ago and it boots so far and stops. It always gets past the "Windows is Loading screen" and then pauses to a black screen with the mouse pointer. Sometimes just to a black screen.

I can get into the bios and safe mode with no problems. I also tried to set it to the best last known configuration, but it's always the same. I see no problems in the control panel and I have'nt loaded any new programs in at least a mth. It seems like everything's working fine but just won't fully boot.

I don't know what to do from here. If someone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it 😉

Currently on my trusty Win2000 Pro rig.

Need assistance.
XP newb

PS: I do remembering "updating Windows at the update site earlier that day. I also updated Office 2003. I rebooted the computer after the updates though, and used it for a few hours with no problems.

I've sometimes seen that happen when I have a memory card in my memory-card reader 😕

From safe mode you can boot up into windows with step by step conformation as each needed item loads---where it stops is where your problem item is---you then may be able to replace the corrupted or missing file on your hard drive with a new copy from either your windows install disk or from the equivalent from another computer.

You could also try a repair install by booting to your windows install disk in your cd drive.---but may have to enable boot to cd in your bios.----you say also that you have tried last know good configuration---but have you tried a system restore.

Its also possible that a powers surge from far away fried your modem before you shut it down and disconnected all phone lines--try removing the modem entirely to see if it then boots.
All device manager does is look at modem software and drivers.---and does nothing to diagnose hardware.---and you can try booting to safe mode with networking and try your modem.

All things to try---it beats banging your head against the wall.---or doing nothing.

I tried Sys Restore and it did nothing. I did a Repair and everything seemed fine. All my content, programs and settings looked fine....... until I clicked on one of my old links, programs or pics.

I'd click on a link in my favorites folder and it would give this error:
The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation conent.
I also got this error:
Fatal Error... We are very sorry, but an internal error ocurred. Please reinstall the product to fix the problem Error code: 1/-3/9000
See Doc #5305

Well I just reformatted and reinstalled and everything's fine now.

One other thing I forgot to mention before I plugged in the computer that morning.......... I touched the top of the case and got zapped from the air being so dry in the house. Could this have caused the problem?

Since you already formatted & re-installed I guess this suggestion is a bit late, but I would have tried re-installing the video driver first... you could have un-installed it in safe-mode.

Btw the surge & static spark are unlikely to have been the problem since everything is working fine now... I think the problem was caused by somthing Windows update did to your PC.
