XP wigs out when installing new larger C drive

I have a new, larger hard drive (call it D). I set it as slave to the C drive. I used Drive Image 7 to make a copy of the older, slower, smaller C:\ drive, which Drive Image says is the procedure to use when upgrading hard drives.

When I made the new D drive the master C, I got an error - basically that the activation thing for XP wigged out. It was on the screen when win is loading settings and checking things out, before you get to the Desktop.

The only hardware change was that I unplugged the C drive and made the new drive - the slave --that got everything copied onto it, the Master.

Where did I go wrong? Would sysprep and a true restore image be more suitable?

What does "wig" mean? Assuming you mean it's asking to be reactivated.... call MS and activate it! It takes only a couple minutes.

no, it doesn't load anything. it gives an error and gets hung there. I have to power down. there's no way to reactivate win. I did this a couple months ago when there was that deal for the $30 80 GB hard drive at officemax. there's an error code but I don't have it anymore. I'm sure I tried safe mode and had the same error, but I can't remember now.

I reset the original drive back to master and am using the new one as slave and full of data. it's ok I guess.

One day when I burn to DVD everything up that's on the slave, I'll try again.

I thought it might be a common issue so I posted.

Without the error finding out if it is a common issue would be tough. The technical term "wigs out" differs slightly between different groups. Why not unplug the old drive, set the new drive as master, install XP on it, and plug the old drive in as a slave? Or all you could need is a fixmbr/fixboot(?), but we wouldn't be able to tell 😉

I didn't want to start from scratch on the new drive becuase I had just reinstalled everything fresh in January. That's why I wanted to image C to D. And I didn't understand the XP activatio scheme. If I only change out a HD, why am I being asked to reinstall? (This is a legit XP. )

I can't do it immediately because I have to find a new home for the data on D before I can reimage C to D and try to boot from the image on D.
I have a controller card and another HD. I'll try to install it in the next few weeks. This isn't a priority for me, as everything is smooth now. I was just curious.

I'll update the post when I do it.
