Decided to stop hijacking other people's threads...sorry ya'll if i jacked your thread in the past, we must have similar problems..

I'm getting number of problems that aren't that fatal but do get annoying. Here's the setup I've got running:

Asus A8V Deluxe, BIOS is the one that came with it...(update?)
Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester
Ati All in Wonder 9600 128MB
PQI Turbo series (gunmetal) 512 Mb ram
Seagate Barracuda 120gb SATA
NEC dbl layer DVD+-RW
Floppy drive
Antec Sonata case with stock power supply
Windows XP SP2

Here are the problems in order of Most annoying to Minor:
1. During windows desktop operation or any application, all of a sudden a blue screen with white letters flashes for about 0.2 seconds and then it restarts. I did a google search on this, and I believe the error message is something like this:

A problem has been detected and window has been shut
down to prevent damage to your computer. The problem
seems to be caused by the following file: cap256.sys

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

If this is the first time you've see this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware of software is
properly installed. if this is a new installation ask your hardware or
software namfacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems
continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software
Disable BIOS memory option such as caching or shadowing, if you need
to use safe mode to remove or disable components restart your computer,
press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode

STOP: 0x000000050 (OXF9CBC4AB, 0x00000000, OXF9CBC4AB, xxxxxxxx)
cap256.sys-address: F9CBC4AB base at F9CBA000 Date stamp nnnnnnnn
^^^^^^ <--- this is the failing module name

Note : If the failing instruction address is within the range of ntoskrnl.exe, the failing module is unreadable character.

just that the specific addresses and stuff are different, but then again, i can't see it.

2. Many games I try installing either can't install or have problems in the game. The games that didn't install are FarCry, which had an error popup that wouldn't allow setup to continue. Then in Call of Duty, many times the game doesn't work when loading, sometimes with errors like "Brush does not have 6 sides" or "____: Children exceeded"...all this weird stuff.

3. I can't update the BIOS...the reason i want to is because I hope the new bios would be able to adapt to my memory better..after all i've also been getting memory error problems in windows...that say The memory can not be "read"...blablabla

I've ran the Memtest86 boot disk, and got over 100,000 errors i believe..and don't know what to do about that. lol

Please, any suggestions are greatly appreciated, i don't wanna believe I made a crap computer setup...cost me about $1k..sheesh

The fact that your memory had over 100,000 errors means your ram is bad.
You don't just run that test for the fun of it and ignore the results.
If i had only a couple errors i'd be concerned, but in your case, that many errors means it's time to RMA that ram and buy something else (Crucial, Corsair, Samsung).

It's highly unlikely that a bios update would fix those problems. You need new ram :)

What is the memory voltage you're giving the RAM, and what model of memory is it exactly? If I ran my Corsair XMS 3200C2 at 2.5 volts, I'd expect errors too, just like I'd expect problems with a Dodge Viper if I gave it scummy low-octane gasoline.

bad ram?? *tear. what does RMA mean?

It's this exact one........the reviews everywhere (not jus newegg) said it was decent..but eh..

Mech: I did change the voltages around to 2.7, 2.5, and 2.6(default) . The ram asks for 2.6 suppossedly though.

I got the BIOS flashed with the new 10.003 beta from ASUS, don't know if it'll help.

Will I really need new RAM? I was hoping to just get an exact new one to run dualchan..:(

If you tried as high as 2.7 then I'll join the bad-RAM bandwagon :)

How in the hell did you copy down the contents of a bluescreen error if it's flashing past in 0.2 seconds?

mech: I just tried running 2.7 with the Memtest86 v3.2, here are the results:

test#--errors
1--------0
2--------238
3--------1897
4--------8090
5--------30950
6--------777
7--------31938
8--------10538
9--------263
10-------0

adds up to over 80,000 errors...still bad ram?
if it is...what do I do? I've never had a situation like this before...what about the "warranty?" there's gotta be one...like cars get 3/36000 limited...i didn't void my warranty did i? everything in the comp is legit ;)

Dopefiend: I didn't copy it, someone else from google had copied it all down when they had kinda the same problem, except it didn't flash .2 seconds, theirs probably stayed blue screen till a manual restart...

I just got a series of memory crashes...first started with an error message saying there is not enough free virtual memory, free some up . then i started getting blue screen flashes right at windows boot up. i changed voltage back to 2.6, and that's what i'm using right now as i'm typing. I can't find what's wrong..

Check where you bought the RAM and unless it's outside their time period, they will probably let you do an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to return it. Tell them you only jumped up and down on it in frustration once :p

;)

The other thought in my mind is that Asus says to use the blue slots first on your board model. If you're using the other two slots, I guess you could try another Memtest run overnight in the blue slots.

yea mech..I got it from Newegg...i'm a first time customer there, so i dunno their policy that well.

Yep, i checked the slots out when my friend and I built the comp, and it seems there is only 1 slot that will work with single channel. No other slot works with whatsoever effort...

Should i jump up and down on it? i weigh quite much...(160 :x)

When did you get it?

If it's within Newegg's return policy deadline, go to them.
If it's too late for that, go to PQI.

Right, so it's not an error message that relates to your problem, right? As in, you cannot possibly say that someone else's bluescreen message is the same as yours, just because, for instance, it's blue?

In which case, without the Memtest faults, it'd be about as much use as an ejector seat for a helicopter.

I got it on 2/10/2005, and I just issued an RMA on Newegg..gonna send it in next week. The RMA is only effective for 14 days

What's the point of posting someone else's bluescreen error messages? I mean, seriously, just because you have the same problem, doesn't mean you have the same error.

Assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

6 days later, i'm back. and ouch. talk about flame.

It's the closest description to the error messages i've been getting that I could find, that's all. Thought it'd help make it easier to diagnose the problem. ..

I went to fry's today, got an exact same stick of ram off their stock, waited 2 hours in their lines, and installed the ram in 5 minutes. I ran the Memtest, and got 0 errors throughout. *sigh of relief*

hopefully i'll be able to run dual channel when the RMA comes in from new jersey to california.

thanks everyone
