XP vs. Windows 7 on a netbook

Has anyone tried both or know of a review on the Internet using both? I hear Windows 7 is supposed to be much better than Vista in terms of the capability of a light weight install, but I'm curious how it compares to XP.

well, i've installed the 32bit win7 RC on my NC10 and am testing the batt life now. i installed the sammy battery manager to get their profiles last night. just playing back videos now to see how long it lasts and i'll do the same thing tomorrow on XP to see what the diff is.

in every day use, it feels as fast as XP. as responsive. my 2GB stick arrived today and i plan to chuck that in there later on in the week

For those that are interested - in win7, i've been playing (on samsung battery saving mode) x264 (AVC) dvd rips (more cpu demaning than mpeg4 ASP)

wifi is on, was charging overnight.

started @ 9:40am and it's now 1:30pm here and it's still going. i'm expecting it to run till at least 2pm - that would mean continuous video playback of 4hrs 20 mins. hopefully longer. i have a little over an hour left of 'confessions of a dangerous mind' to go.

i figure that with ASP being used instead of AVC, the battery life would be a fair bit better. not to mention wifi being off.

me likey so far 🙂

Be sure you use a pozidriv screwdriver when you open up the Sammy memory compartment. A Philips head is likely to strip the screw. I picked up this screwdriver from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Wera-032...ewdriver/dp/B000X1SZBM that was recommended by Samsung at their site. They had a big warning posted about using the proper screwdriver. The installation was a breeze and it's nice to have 2 gb on the great Sammy nc10.

FYI, running ASP video off the hard drive - wifi off - instead of playing off another PC via wifi - results in slightly less battery life. 4hrs 20 mins (after changing from 5% to 3% critical). i've copied the ASP vids to an 8GB SDHC card and will try that out tomorrow morning. that way the drive should power off and the wifi will be off. i'm hoping that the flash card will take a tiny amount of power and result in more batt life.

will try XP day after probably

edit

4 hrs 38 mins running off a flash card. wifi off, and hard drive set to spin down after 1 minute

tomorrow i'll run the same test on XP

ok, just did a test on XP, same settings as on win7 above.

started playing @ 10:30am on the dot. with battery critical levels set to 3%, it just went into hibernate now @ 16:06

much better than on windows 7 (4hrs 38 min). XP gave 5hrs 36 min.

BUT, win7 didnt dim the screen. hopefully i can get that fixed thanks to another thread and retest under win7 (i prefer it to XP).

EDIT

ok, same test as in XP but on win7. same vids played. screen dimmed to 2 bars

started @ 8pm - went to hibernate just a min ago - makes it 5 hours 40 mins. sweet!
