XP vs. Vista

I have access through my school both Office 2007 and Vista Enterprise. I have upgraded my office suite to 2007 and so far so good. My real question is whether or not it is safe or wise to upgrade to Vista on my current setup (laptop in sig). 2.0 Pentium M (not core duo), 1gb of ddr2, 80gb hd, and a nvidia fx go1400 vid card (drafting card but still decent with most games). The upgrade will cost me nothing and I heard that SP1 for Vista will be released sometime this month.

I just made the jump about a month ago, and aside from some mouse issues I have (which may in fact be due to my hardware), everything has run smoothly. If you're worried about stability, the drivers are stable. And performance-wise, if you don't have to turn on all the visual goodies then there's no reason to worry. One thing though, 1gb of RAM may not be optimal, but if you have a USB drive on hand you can always try Ready Boost.

Notebook DDR2 memory is really cheap right now, so get a 2x1GB pack! You should find it $80ish at Newegg.

1GB on Vista is mediocre, but 2GB on Vista is excellent. With 1GB, you may find yourself in a lot of situations where XP w/1GB is faster. But 2GB, especially once indexing and readyboost get rolling, you'll see a decent boost.

Enjoy 🙂

I have a 1gb cruzer stick that I can use for readyboost. I'll look into the memory thing.

EDIT: Looked on Newegg and found 2gb of Crucial DDR2 667 for bout $85 which is pretty nice deal. Only question I have is will it work at 667 w/ my computer or will it just plug away at 533 which is the speed of my current memory?

Safe?..You think your laptop is going to blow up or something if you install Vista, personally I'm using Vista x64 on my PC and its rock stable no isssues at all,as to SP1 it won't make a lot of difference to stability of Vista ,so waiting for that is pointless, sure it'll fix some bugs etc....btw you see better performance/improvements down the road with newer drivers as and when they are released.

Drivers right now are stable but graphic companies they are working on speed/performance increases.

As to SP1 I doubt you'll see it anytime soon,I read that there may be a beta SP1 out in July/August,however don't expect any official SP1 until Q4 or even later.

It will work great! More than likely your bios will go ahead and start running @ the 667 speed. If not, no problem, you'll still get the giant boost from doubling your ram.
