Here's a cut/paste of an email I sent to someone else. I thought it might be of interest to some of you. This wasn't scientific in any way, and my procedures could probably be improved. It's a good quick and dirty comparison though.

I booted into XP today to take care of some maintenance =-O and thought I'd re-download 3dMark for comparison to Vista(I couldn't transfer my previously downloaded copy due to folder permissions) so here's the results:

XP | Vista

3DMark Score - 5125 | 5263

SM 2.0 Score - 1967 | 2019

SM 3.0 Score - 1941 | 2011

CPU Score - 2838 | 2818

Return To Proxycon - 16.082fps | 16.353fps

Firefly Forest - 16.708fps | 17.298fps

CPU1 Red Valley - 0.907fps | 0.886fps

CPU2 Red Valley - 1.421fps | 1.434fps

Canyon Flight(SM 3.0) - 17.035fps | 17.302fps

Deep Freeze(SM 3.0) - 21.792fps | 22.927fps

Conclusion? Vista is the winner by a small margin . Tbh it really isn't that big a difference between them. I would call them equal in performance.

A little bit interesting, but nothing really new. Benches over the past year have had different results depending on what it is your testing. 3dMark may show them running pretty close together, but other benches may show some huge differences in other areas.

Need I go into copying files? ;)

Oh, and if you did it with the system in your sig, the amount of RAM being used changes Vista's performance dramatically.

I've found that the amount of ram, at least 2gb or above doesn't make a difference in 3dmark. I had the same score in Vista with 4gb as I did with 2gb. I'd be willing to bet XP is the same.

lol, yes, because 3dmark is my FAVORITE game!!! Pay no mind to the increased memory requirements, or slowdown in COH, BF2, etc.

Yeah, I wanted to run 3dmark, but it insisted on installing DX9, and I figured that wouldn't be a good idea.

I used the regular version from futuremark's site. I can't remember if I OKd the installation of DX9, or if it even asked me, but the standard version works.

Well if people keep posting gaming topics in the OS forum, I can understand why!

This was created before there was a games forum ;) Also, the original intent was for a quick comparison between O/Ss, not necessarily for gaming per say.
