XP Visual Effects

I just installed WinXP Pro SP2 on my system. My visual effects on the desktop are lagging big time. Every time i scroll down a page, of click on the start menu, or close a balloon notification, i get very noticeable lag. Now, my system specs are:
Windows XP PRo SP2
AMD Athlon64 3400+
Asus K8n
Rosewill 2x512mb PC3200
Radeon x800xt AIW

I dont htink my system should have trouble running the basic windows OS. I am running catalyst 5.8 drivers for my video card and have a ll chipset drivers and current windows updates.

Did you install the motherboard drivers BEFORE installing the video card drivers?

i installed the motherbaord drivers, then the video card drivers, then removed the vid card drivers and installed the new catalyst 5.8 drivers.
