xp upgrade question

When upgrading XP (from older to newer build), do you guys usually just upgrade off of your HD (after iso extracted) or do you always burn the ISO to CD and upgrade from there? I know that doing a clean install is always best, but I already have too much installed to do that.
 
I'm not running XP yet, but if I was I would burn the ISO to a CD first.
Just incase something went wierd in the install and it trashed my computer.

that way I wouldn't have to redownload the ISO
