You know, I'd let those buggers install the XP update on my PC for my Radeon 9700 Pro, but It would help if in the least, I had some idea of what it is....??

I tried to look on the MS KB, and it doesn't give any info. And of course no info, is provided with the update waiting on my PC....

Anyone have ANY IDEA what this is??

Hmmm, but I have the OMEGA Catalyst 4.12 Drivers installed...

Do I really need this update from MS?

The same thing happened to me. The problem is that it starts a continuous loop where XP keeps trying to install it after I reboot. I finally had to select the option that said "ignore this update" in order for it to stop.

No... I would just ignore it and tell Windows Update to not remind you of that update again.

I believe the update is for the new 5.1 series of Catalyst drivers. Just wait a few weeks for the Omega version.

Isn't that what you should have done from the beginning? lol

There is nothing wrong with Omega drivers. Sometimes, manufacturer drivers just dont cut it. There's nothing wrong with manufacturer drivers though either. I think they suck though.

I would have had I known that's what it was trying to install. I have automatic updates on so I do not know what exactly is being installed.

What are you talking about? The Microsoft driver updates are from the hardware manufacture. They are just tested to verify the compatibility with windows.

Well a now have a much HUGER problem.

I was using the Omega drivers. So un-installed and used Driver Cleaner. TWICE. Then reboot and install the ATI official 5.1 Cat drivers. Now at 1280x1024 on my Samsung 955DF CRT monitor, everything is SUPER blurry...

I bought this POS back in Aug 02, thank god it came with a 3 Year warranty...but I've already taken it in for servicing in Summer 03.

Damn, time to lug this 50lb POS back....UGGGG...

If I wasn't into gaming, I'd have a LCD by now...

I installed a update driver from microsoft for my AGP controller, and it was indeed the wrong one(!!NO VIDEO!!), I had to go downstairs get one of my old pci graphics cards, reboot with it and uninstall the driver. I emailed MS and they said they did post the wrong driver, and they would correct the problem.

Microsoft didnt make the card. They're just trying to figure out what the hell is going on. Their drivers still wont be as good as the manufacturers unaltered files.

I've had the 9700 Pro. Good card, but I did have issues with a few Catalyst versions and ALL of the Microsoft drivers. Its not worth the trouble.

Microsoft didnt make the card.

Nor did they make or alter the drivers as your suggesting. These are just the ATI drivers that have been thru the HCL testing, ATI wrote them and delivered them to MS. However, they tend to be older than the latest drivers from ATI directly as the HCL process takes some time to complete and only stable driver sets are sent to MS for testing.

I've loaded thousands of windows drivers and never had a problem. You do know your suppose to update drivers in device manager and not install them from the windows update web site right?

That is not true. Updating from either way provides the same result.
