XP to XP64..

Just wanted to see what some general opinons would be.

I am currently running an Baron based XP, and gonna be buying a Athlon 64 cpu next week.

The board I will be using will be a Msi K8n Neo 2 Plat. I was looking at the 3200+ venice and 3500+ SD core. Both run a 10x multiplier, and I do plan to overclock alittle. So from what i've seen these were suppose to be good. I'm currently running PC3200ram. For me to get the best overclocking experience out of this setup, would I need to upgrade in the near future to PC4000 or higher memory?

The SD 3500+ is $364.99 CDN

The cache shouldn't make that much of a difference that would be worth the Price difference?

Yesterday I also picked up a XP90 and 92mm 48CFM fan. Should be enough for some mild overclocking.

Yeah the Barton is decent, but holding back my XTPE! that is the primary reason for the upgrade. I bought the board like 4 months ago was just sitting on it and waiting for the right time.
I would have loved it if 4200+ was in my price range. but its $700 CDN and alittle more than I wanna spend. I do know AMD soon plans to release a 3800+ X2 tho. But ya If I can hit 2.5Ghz or more on that venice. That should hold me over for abit.

I took alook at some 1GB 3200+ sticks which have fallen in price quite abit. but the only game I would play that would benefit that much ram would be BF2. So I am looking at some PC4000 or higher in the future maybe.

I've been looking at upgrading from my Xp2800+ but dont see enough performance yet, I'm waiting for the 4200+ X2 to come down in price, that looks like a nice upgrade...

I wouldn't spend the money on upgrading. A 2400mhz Barton is still competitive in alot of things. I doubt it is bottlenecking the video to where you aren't getting more than 30-40fps. Its your money I guess.

Can't a 3000+ Venice hit the same marks as a 3200?

When I built my computer a few days ago, I installed XP 64 on it. Right now I'm using 32bit edition because I was having A LOT of problems with drivers. I'm going to stick with 32 bit until they get their driver situation handled.

Yes I don't plan on installing WINXP 64. Never did, I will be installing the 32bit version. When winxP 64 is abit more mature I might check it out.

I guess I should have stated it more clearly, this thread is about going from a Athlon XP to a athlon 64. Not a Win 32 to 64bit!

Stick with Windows XP.
The 64-bit edition is still somewhat buggy due to lack of drivers.

Go with the 3200+ Venice.

SD's extra cache isn't all that large of an improvement.

yeah I was kinda going more towards the venice also. You have a nice overclock there n7. Is it possible for me to overclock the fsb while keeping the memory in spec?

A barton will be a cpu bottleneck for an X800XTPE or 6800U.

Making the jump to an A64 made a huge difference for me.

From what I've been reading, 3000+ Venice will go higher than a 3200+ more often than not.

Even if you get a little more out of 3200+, the cost/performance ratio isn't as good.

My Venice will do AT LEAST 2.8GHZ.

Just waiting on the XP-90 🙂 Stock cooler got me to 2.6GHZ, but the temps started to scare me 😉

Just use the memory divider.

I highly reccomend the 3000+ if you plan on overclocking, it's the best bang for your buck CPU.

The ONLY thing I like about the 3200+ over the 3000+ is the 10x multiplier which will give you a higher clock with a lower HTT. But if you have a quality mobo like the DFI NF4, it shouldn't be a problem.
