XP to Win7 upgrade question

Hi,

I know that you can get the upgrade version of Win7 if you have XP, but I'm just wondering if it matters that I have an XP upgrade disc (from ME) and not the full retail version?

I assume that when I go to install Win7 it would ask for me to put the original XP disc in to verify I own an authentic copy before doing a clean install, but just wondered if it would take issue with it being an upgrade version of XP.

Mind you, I know it's still the full version of XP on the disc, and I can't imagine why it wouldn't work, but then I don't think I would be too surprised if such a small technicality ended up being an issue.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

I've heard the answer to this is no...it will not work with an upgrade disc. Whether MS follows through on this policy...we will see.

Thanks for the reply. Can you recall where you heard that? I actually just came across this at:

Down in the comments area, the question was asked by someone and answered by the author of the article, and I'm hope it applies to my case:

I have the student upgrade edition of Windows Vista Ultimate, will I be able to upgrade this version? And if so will the Windows 7 install require the Vista disc for proof of previous version or XP disc (I don't actually have an XP disc, used the double install workaround to avoid needing it to install Vista).

Yep, you can upgrade an upgrade no problem.

What do you think?

Edit:

Apparently, another person spoke with a rep and was told that in order to upgrade, you have to have the previous OS installed and activated. I would think that it should work for me then. Can anyone think of a reason that it wouldn't?

If you have XP installed and activated, it will work. That is all that the Win 7 upgrade is looking for.
