Im in the process of a new build and am installing xp now, after xp finishes, should i just pop in the windows 7 upgrade disc and do a clean install, or should I put drivers and stuff in? I figure its just gonna format everything so why not pop in win 7 right after xp finishes.

Ps. do i need sp3 before installing 7?

You can't upgrade from XP to 7 so don't waste your time installing XP. Just go straight to Windows 7.

He just has an upgrade disk.

Exactly....it will ask you for both keys during the install / setup process.

A clean install with Upgrade media is just what it sounds like: You will perform a clean install of Windows 7 using an Upgrade version of Windows 7, instead of the so-called (and more expensive) "Full" version.

It can use the upgrade disk but in effect, it will do a clean install. No direct upgrade from XP. But, the upgrade process is accepted.

I had winXP oem installed on my computer, I just booted from the win7 x64 upgrade disc and chose custom install. It let me choose which partition to install win7 so I installed it on my new hdd, and now I apperently have a dual boot setup. I'm not planning on using the xp install, but I keep it around until I'm sure everything is transfered correctly to win7.
