XP time messing up

Ive got 2 problems, first, on my machine, windows likes to set the time back 2 hours about once a week. Anyone know why this happens?

The other, my neighboor said his time on his pc keeps jumping around every time he boots up. could this be because the CMOS battery is dead?

never heard of a cmos battery dying, but its very probable
if you try getting a new one, contact the manufacturer of the board first to make sure you get the right kind of battery and stuf

Mobo CMOS battery is standard toshiba or panasonic cell battery you can get from Radio Shack.

this happened to me before when I used Ghost to retore my HD and OS but I forgot to change the Time Zone.

The CMOS batt I see most often is labeled "CR2032" and can be found at RadioShack, Wal-Mart, etc. for very little. I usually don't even bother with the manuf. of the motherboard...I just pop the original battery out of the board and go match the numbers at an electronics store.

You have the wrong time zone set in your Date & Time Properties. XP synchronizes its clock with a timeserver (time.windows.com) every 7 days. It's grabbing the time for a time zone 2 hours before yours, so adjust it to the correct time zone by double-clicking on your clock and select the "Time Zone" tab. If you are positive you have the correct time zone set, then it could be an actual error in the query process, which is unlikely as it is a fairly simple process. CMOS battery drainage is also unlikely, because you'd be getting checksum errors on POST if it was weak enough to lose 2 hours in a week.

As for your neighbor, if his time is jumping on every boot, then it is likely to be the CMOS battery.
