XP thinks mapped drives are data files...

I was over at a place today doing work, and they have WinXP computers with all updates, and a Suse linux file server. The shared drive on the server is mapped as the F:\ on each computer. On several of them, if I open My Computer then double click on the mapped drive, instead of openning the drive, XP pops up that window of "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." Which, of course, makes absolutely no sense. So I have to right-click on the mapped drive and select "explore" to bring up windows explorer showing me the contents of the shared drive.

Why?

Just a wild guess, but maybe something to do with the File System structure which is used on the different workstations ??? Maybe some NTFS and others FAT32 or can XP even use FAT32 ???
