XP Task Manager

What are all of these processes running for. I have like 20 of them, but no applications running. Can I close some of them?

No, you can't. When you used Win98/ME you had just as many running, its just that Win9x's task manager hides them.

All the processes you see there are vital to windows. If you try to End any of them you get a Access Denied error.

Most of the processes are vital for the system. However, some applications only run as a process, and to force them to close, you must use the task manager.
