XP system won't go into stand by

Current XP installation is about a year and a half old. Whenever I try to set the system to go into stand by or hibernate, XP goes into the "preparing to stand by" screen and nothing happens. I've left the system running on that screen for more than a half hour and it doesn't work.

The BIOS is set at S3 standby only. Standby and hibernate are both enabled in XP.

Running the following hardware:

Athlon x2 3800+
Asus A8V Deluxe (lastest non-beta BIOS)
Radeon 9600 Pro (latest drivers)
1GB Crucial ram
Audigy 2 (latest drivers)

PS/2 logitech keyboard
USB MX518 Logitech mouse

any ideas what I should look for to get this working?

Creative sound cards really, really don't like to share IRQs. If your audigy is sharing an IRQ, this could be your problem - I had the exact same problem with my X-Fi, preventing it from suspending/waking properly. Try moving it to another PCI slot.

It's 2007 and people are still swapping Creative cards around different PCI cards to solve problems.

Was junk. Still is junk.

Why you people are still willing to waste money on their junk escapes me.

Didn't see any indication that it was sharing an IRQ. Tried changing it to another PCI slot and it didn't do the trick. I figure it's gotta be software related because Vista goes into stand by just fine on this same system via dual boot.

Guess I'll have to do a clean install sometime in the future.
