XP: System Volume Information. What is it? Can't access

I think there is quite a bit of info in there, as my C drive is filling up and nothing shows up in other directories. The drive loses space on a crash (not virus related) and wondering where the info is being kept. Since I can't view the folder it's my only guess. Any idea how to get in there and if anything is safe to delete? Or if I can even check and see how much space it takes up? (I think it's possible as I want to say I've done it before).

If you are running XP, there are system capabilities that use large amounts of HDD space and reserve more for system use. The main culprit is System Restore. If you leave it to defaul, it will use up several hundred MB on any given partition. You can control it. First, you can turn it off completely and recover quite a bit of space. Second, you can go to Control Panel, System, and System Restore tab. Then highlight the drive in question and click the settings button. That will show you what it is using. You can slide the slider all the way to the left and it will use 3% of your drive space. All the way to the right (default) is about 12%.

Your page file also can be using space out of control. Check to see what setting you have for Virtual memory.
