XP System restore: works, but no auto restore points made anymore. Can I tweak that setting back?

I'm not sure what service or dependencies need to be active for this automatic restore point creation feature to work.

I can set them manually without any trouble, but the automatic setting is something I need the directions to navigate to.

Thanks,

hans

Ok, I just navigated to it but it took a while. I will do so again and try to list it here. Start with Control panel, then "Back up your Data. Then, in the box that pops up, look in the dialogue for a link that says "Advanced Mode". Then click on Schedule jobs, then "Add Job". Then on the next box that pops up, click the Next button. Make your selection there and then click Next. Browse to pick your destination for the info and then click Next. Select the type of backup then click Next. After a couple of more settings boxes and clicking Next a couple of times, you will get to a box that says "When to back up" and has a button that you need to click that says Set Schedule. That will take you to where you need to go for setting up reguarly scheduled backups at prearranged times.

EDIT!!Crapola, I just noticed that I actually did not answer your intended question. You asked about automatic System Restore and I gave you System Backup. Sorry but what the heck, Backup can be a good thing too. 😉😀 After a quick look at the System Restore I could not find what you asked about. I will look around a bit and get back to you if I find it.

i'd like to know this too... i just create a new point before changes (driver updates, etc) and then create a new one if it works ok.

neways you'll prolly get pointed to a faq...

OK, no real joy but I did find out more than you ever wanted to know about the system restore function. I will give a list of links so you can do the reading. However, I will mention a few things. Apparently the OS automatically creates some restore points on it's own with certain stimulus such as doing the Auto Update and whatnot. Read up on that. Also, you really should not rely on the Restore function for everything. It only restores certain items that have to do with the OS only. It will not necessarily back up your files and folders. You need the Backup utility for that.
Please forgive my earlier (and new) references to XP System Restore. I see that you are running ME but the program is almost identical (with some improvements) in XP. Now for some links (they all refer to XP but should be informative).

LInk 2
Link 3
Link 4 for using Backup Utility

Have fun!
BTW, the thread mentions XP System Restore but your system description mentions ME. Have you just not updated the system description? Just checking, I get easily confused. 😉

Buz2b, you are quite right in that my system specs are now quite out of date. It has been some time since my last post. Thanks for mentioning it, as some updating is certainly in order.

I am really suprised that you were so kind as to take the time to amass links to all that good information; many thanks!

I intend to study it and make the needed changes. It should be fun, actually.

Also, very interesting info on the backup utility. This little item I have never used, but it would seem to be very useful.

Best Regards,

hans

Glad to help. Keep it in mind for a later date when another fellow AT'er needs help. That's what it is all about. Enjoy your reading.
