1) how can i edit my started up programs? (and not the start folder)

2) what programs out there find and remove spy and adware programs?

2) Adaware is my favourite

Does msconfig actually make changes? I read that it's not supposed to be used for permanently changing what programs load at startup.

Ad-Aware and Spybot should really be used together.

msconfig makes changes to the registry. I know of no other way (except removing the software) to stop products like RealPlayer from running unwanted background processes. XP does give a warning the next time you login, but that is a one time annoyance.

It doesn't change the actual files, but it does make a copy with modifications and tells Windows to use those files rather than the original ones.

It'll be permanent till you use msconfig to change it back.

The guideline about msconfig is not to use it in attempt to control what services start up.
