XP Start Menu won't change (and stay) to the "classic" menu

Stupid fvcking windows keeps changing my start menu to the sh!tty default big ugly blue theme. I switch it to the "classic" view and it won't change back. I'm on XP Pro SP2. Anyone else ever have this, or have a remedy?

I've changed the group policy to stay that way... but that doesn't work

VooDoo do not attempt the below reg Hack until you answer a couple more questions

1.When you select the Classic mode and open the Properties Panel Back up ihas it reverted to the XP Mode again or is it still checked
2.Are you Using an administrator account
3.Have you attempted to select any options under the Customize Button

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSimpleStartMenu"=dword:00000001

Mugg, he's talking about the theme, not the menu.

OP: Right click on a blank part of the desktop, go to properties. You'll be in the theme window. Change the current theme to Windows Classic.

There you go.

Well, if he changed it to classic, he should have gotten the "My Computer", "Recycle Bin", etc icons.
Assuming he didn't place them right under the Taskbar Properties window, that's pretty odd.

Point, missed that.

But his complaint about "blue" related to themes, not the start menu 😉

True, didn't even notice that since the topic complained about "improved" vs classic start menu 🙂

This guy has over 855 post . I am sure he is on top of the select theme.. Besides anyone going after the Group Policy is not a guy that cannot change a theme ..

post count really means nothing.

nope, but I've seen some pretty strange things

first I'd try creating new account and see if it can be done with that

then I'd try restoring a registry back up

those hive files can and do get messed up where settings are corrupt or the permissions in the registry get corrupt or something then they can be changed.

mostly I've seen it with hardware where hardware starts to be redetected
then when looking in the registry and try to clean it up
find that the original key can no longer be deleted

thats not where you change the look of windows....its under display properties. Stop trying to tell him to do hacks, and things are broken. He's simply confusing the start menu classic mode vs windows theme class mode. Simply put.

It's still odd that he obviously either has the new start menu, or has hidden the "classic mode icons" away.

actually I think we are talking about specifically the visual styles and buttons
which there is a check box in the advanced system properties performance options

but anyway all these settings are in the registry and if it was working restoring a backup should fix it

but anyway it's all pointless, no one is talking to the person who started this thread

Here's a pic of the stupid problem:

I dont see anything wrong with that pic, in fact that setting that you selected only changes the style of the Start Menu(when you actually open it) not the windows themes. You didnt even show a pic of the opened Start menu to prove that setting wasnt working. Windows themes can be adjusted in the Display properties

Yeah, it's really the "visual styles" setting that keeps reverting itself.

I mixed up the two when I made this thread, sorry for the confusion guys.

It's that setting in the System Properties / Advanced Tab / under Performance click "Settings" and it's the last option:
"Use visual styles on windows and buttons"

I uncheck it, apply it, and it stays sometimes for a few restarts... but in the end it always reverts itself to being checked.

Here's how it's supposed to force the setting...

1. Type GPEDIT.MSC at Start/Run
2. Navigate to User Configuration>Administrative templates>Control panel>Display>Desktop theme
3. On the right hand pane, double click on "Load a specific visual style..." and select enabled and leave the path blank
4. OK your way out.

And it does work when I do that... for a little while... then again... it reverts itself. I know this is the correct way, because when I have that enabled I can't change the setting back doing the system properties way after it reverts itself.

Does it revert while you are logged in , That world freak me out.. how long are we talking about . It does seem like a Policy then doesn't it ?

This is a fun one (for us )

He's changed the picture now, before it was a desktop with the classic menu newly selected, and still he had none of the standard icond(My Computer, etc) on the desktop as he should.

Yeah. This is interesting.

Have you installed the Plus! pack or any similar Microsoft software?

And have you ran virus/spyware scanners? I don't think these would relate to the problem, but I've seen weirder things happen in Windows before. (Just...don't ask 😛)

Disable windows themes from services.msc. That should stop it from ever coming back

YAHTZEE!!! Thank you, can't believe I never thought of that one. Anyway... case closed, unless the damn service starts to enable itself (highly unlikely)

I ran a deep scan with adaware, and a spybot, and they both only came up with a few tracker cookies.
