Hi,

Im running XP-Pro SP2 (new install yesterday) and ive never had this problem before, but sometimes maybee 1 out of 5 times i click on the start button, it freezes. The computer doesn't freeze, but the button stays "depressed" for a second extra then the start menu opens as usual. ...why is this happening?

Nice laptop. 🙂 Several things could be causing this problem. If it's a fresh install did you install the chipset drivers? Sometimes a process using up cpu time will cause lag. Open up task manager and see what is eating up the cpu time when the start button hangs.

i doubt this is what's causing it, but you can try the following:

Remove Delay in Windows start menu display:

open key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
modify the value of MenuShowDelay *Default is 400
***I warn against making this value 0 as it makes it nearly impossible to get your mouse onto the menu before it tries to close, but numbers much smaller than 400 can be used.

it removes the delay and makes the start menu more responsive. although i would check what john said before you try this.

That happens when the CPU is busy doing saomething else, and the Start button has been pressed - and that action is in a queue. Patience usually resolves the problem - but sometimes a reboot is warranted.
